You watch your associations. I lived in a duplex when I first got married. The other tenant was, for lack of better words, lower class and had equally or lower class associations. They had their car broken in and their apartment robbed - door kicked in. We, fortunately, never experienced any issues other than loud noises from their side of the building.

I will never forget having talked to the husband when they first moved in. He wanted to become a police officer so he could beat people up. All I did was look a the ground and make a grunting sound like I understood. We didn't become friends.

A common pattern unfortunately.. I wouldn't be surprised if my friend's son is either dead or in prison. The friend moved away and I haven't heard from him in several years.

Yeah, a prank would make more sense. I had a dark thought that he killed his friend, then staged this to cover it up. Forensics should get to the bottom of that pretty quickly though.

Ditto! Don’t befriend thugs. They were thugs before they met you, and will be thugs first and always. At least, if you don’t count them as ‘friends’ you won’t feel bad at all if you have to defend yourself against them.
