Alaska write-in fun: Is this ballot ambiguous?

Have a look at some of the “questionable ballots” being flagged by Joe Miller’s team. The one I posted in the thumbnail on the front page is being challenged, I think, because the “r” in “Murkowski” looks vaguely like a “v”. That’s what it’s come to here. If you’re wondering why Team Miller is forced to resort to frivolous challenges like these, it’s simple math. Murky evidently did a bang-up job of instructing her supporters on how to spell her name, to the point where just 1.5 percent of the write-ins thus far have been tossed out due to successful challenges. Miller’s problem, of course, is that he needs something on the order of 11,000 ballots disqualified in order to win, so he’s going to make sure to challenge that many and preserve them for scrutiny by the courts even if a bunch are pretty obviously valid. Nate Silver elaborates:

If you follow the link, you'll some of the ballots Miller is challenging. They appear to be spelled correctly and any confusion has to do with the handwritting. It appears as though it's not going to matter as the number of challenges won't get him over the top.

So if the situation were reversed, would Liza be making the same challenges?

Or would she be Mrs. Nice Guy?

“Murky evidently did a bang-up job of instructing her supporters on how to spell her name...”

You mean the UNIONS did a good job of instructing their employees how to spell her name.

Let’s say her name was Lisa Miller and on the ballot and Joe’s last name was Murkowski and he was the write-in, who would be right?

I like Joe Miller but those ballots in the photos look like valid votes for the Cow.

Are we supposed to believe that 98.5% of Alaskans can spell Murkowski? I would bet my life that 98.5% of Alaskans can’t spell Alaska.

Who would be right?

Whatever the law says would be right.

It would have been SO easy for her to avoid all of this write-in difficulty with getting her name “exactly” right...she could have won a primary and had her name listed on the ballot.

Hmm, is this a random sampling of challenged ballots, or are these hand picked so someone can have something to write about?

The sad fact is that - contrary to their image - many AKers are dependent to gov’t funds. Who else would’ve even come up with the Bridge to Nowhere on a drawing board? While the rest of us in the 48 would laugh at such a project, it probably made sense to many Akers. Murky, Stevens and the like have sold their state into quasi-colonial status in exchange for $$.

I wanted Joe to win but he seriously needs to let it go and stop acting like a Democrat crybaby.

If these are representative of challenged ballots, Miller’s got some problems.

I don’t want Murkowski to win but this is silliness.

Probably if the shoe was on the other foot, she would challenge each and every vote. And I would take that as proving what I already thought of her. The earlier ruling that write-ins for Miller wouldn’t count, I obviously thought was petty and wrong, not to mention illegal in my view.

I expect Miller to challenge any obviously phony votes. I would expect him to challenge dead voters or illegal voters. Votes by legal voters where the intent is clear I would expect to be counted.

As far as Lisa Murkowski; I can't stand the b***h. But, she ran an effective campaign and Joe ran a sucky campaign. Just think, had my girl Sarah, not resigned the Governorship, she'd be calling the shots in this recount.
