LOS ANGELES – The Pentagon and NASA experts have determined that a billowing contrail seen streaking into the skies above Southern California was likely caused by an airliner and not a missile.

The phenomenon recorded Monday evening by a TV news helicopter created a media sensation and a vapor trail of commentary across the Internet about the possibility of a secret missile firing. But the military insisted it knew of no rockets launched in the area.

Defense Department spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said Wednesday that officials were satisfied it was an airplane contrail distorted by camera angle, winds and other environmental factors including a setting sun.

Military experts studied the video and talked to all government agencies that might have been involved in a missile launch and none reported having launched one, Lapan said.

I think the corkscrew pattern in the contrail has to be explained. Can aircraft contrails produce a corkscrew pattern?? Can a rocket exhaust produce a corkscrew pattern? Which is it?? inquiring minds want to know.

It’s a flow and flap thing or something, that’s as technical as I get. the atmosphere has to go somewhere and intermixes with whatever the heck passes thru it. ya get all kinds of gnarly stuff, swirls and such

That would be right about here:

30 seconds into launch, over 3 miles altitude - about the same altitude as the mystery missile. Note the tight exhaust trail. And bright fire from the rockets.

40 seconds later, rocket has gone 17 miles higher - over 20 miles in altitude. Serious fire from the rockets - no doubt, no dull redish reflection appearing briefly then disappearing.

For those who think they see a solid booster rocket separation on the mystery video, here's what this one looks like:

And finally, three minutes after launch, extreme zoom sees the fire end of the rockets disappearing, traveling over 2,600 miles per hour.

Here's the jet contrail during its ten minutes of observation:

No fire, slow moving. Where would a missile have been in ten minutes?

That is the first shot I remember seeing of the “launch” .. can’t see the horizon, but noted the jaunt to the right ..
I bit on Trident right away, just a gut feeel. I’m probably wrong and that’s OK. I liked the intensity of the pretty orangeish color of the plume, more than likely caused by a nice sunset? could be, we had a couple really colorful ones of recent that I recall.. altho ya never know what new stuff is cooking in the ol’ propellant labs..

There are no records of a plane in the area having taken off from Los Angeles International Airport or from other airports in the region. The Navy and Air Force have said that they were not conducting any missile tests from submarines, ships, or Vandenberg Air Force Base. The Navy has also ruled out an accidental firing from one of its own submarines.

Missile experts, including those from Jane’s in London, say the plume was definitely from a missile, possibly launched from a submarine. WMR has learned that the missile was likely a JL-2 ICBM, which has a range of 7,000 miles, and was fired in a northwesterly direction over the Pacific and away from U.S. territory from a Jin class submarine. The Jin class can carry up to twelve such missiles.

Navy sources have revealed that the missile may have impacted on Chinese territory and that the National Security Agency (NSA) likely posseses intercepts of Chinese telemtry signals during the missile firing and subsequent testing operations...

anyone else notice that Axlerod made an annoucment that obummer was considering keeping Bush Tax for a while longer, then this (possible crisis) appears in all media and there seems to be a retraction from Axlerod on the tax cuts
