(CBS) There are about 23 million people alive today who've served in the United States armed forces.
On this Veteran's Day, the eleventh day of the eleventh month, originally marking the end of WW I, Americans honor all the military men and women who have given so much for our country.
Earlier this week, "Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith met with former Secretary of State and retired Gen. Colin Powell at Arlington National Cemetery. Smith says Powell's "eloquent words about veterans and what they've done for us were truly moving."
With the rules of engagement hampering them every step of the way, he’s exactly right. Troops in WW2 ROE: kill ‘em, if they surrender don’t.
BTW, has 0 even mentioned Veteran’s day yet?
I doubt it. Notice, again, he’s not even honoring our Veterans with his presents.
I agree..now go away Powell.
Wouldn't want a present from Soetoro and his presence would only be political theater.
While it is true that many American service peoples have served longer terms than their family members who served in previous wars, it is also true that this Republic has destroyed its industrial base and the jobs that would otherwise occupy their time.
Everybody needs to be somewhere, and young productive people know they are better off in the service than cooling their heels in Detroit waiting for someone dumb enough to start a business and provide them an opportunity.
I have a friend who served more days in Iraq than his grandfather served after being dropped in France before DDay. He only left the corps because he was able to get a job as a prison guard. He did 25 years in the corps, and would have stayed if he had no other option.
We have destroyed most opportunity for the marginally educated to survive. We are at war. Wait till they all come home and have to sit out the next decade on food stamps in public housing.
He is in Korea. He could make a TOTUS speech to the troops there. Or not. Most likely not.
I don’t. What a disappointment he turned out to be. It’s a shame when people represent themselves to be what they are not; but to do it on a national level is sad. He is disgraceful.
Ah yes....my spelling leaves something to be desired. Thanks for correcting me without beating me up.
Is life worth more now than in the 1940's? After all, isn't the willingness to sacrifice their life what we ultimately 'ask of our troops'?
We agree. When Colin Powell was a rising star he visited Ft.Carson at a time when the post was struggling with the
racial riots-Black Panther— the movie Tell ‘em Willie Boy is Here—and such. He spoke to us all dressed right and covered down about non-discrimination. IT was eloquent. Then when he was one of the Commanders in the Sandbox and advised the President we should pull out without finishing the job. I
disagreed. when he said our flag is nothing but brightly colored cloth and the Court right to say desecration is Protected speech. I disagreed. When he said in Crisis,1992
Skin color is a benign non behavioral characteristic Sexual Orientation is perhaps the most profound of human behavioral characteristics.Comparison of the two a convenient but invalid argument.I very much Agree. He is a mixed bag-and
a very political person.Eyes open-guns up.
A powell movement farts.

Colon Bowel? Fighting to be relevant...
If he really wanted to stand up for the troops in Afghanistan, then he would mention that worst problem is that the ROEs are killing them.
But that might get him in trouble with the press and the left.
As I recall it, he delegated the wreath cerimony on Memorial day this year. On this Veteran’s day he is out of the country and silent.
I sense a trend.
Fool me once...
