Mayor Mike needs lessons on when to shut his yap -- like when he's galli vanting around the globe and is suddenly moved to bash a key part of the US government, using crude hyperbole.
"You look at who we're electing to Congress, to the Senate," the mayor said in Hong Kong last week, days after the midterm elections. "They can't read."
He went on: "I'll bet you a bunch of these people don't have passports. We're about to start a trade war with China if we're not careful here, only because nobody knows where China is."
Some folks, understandably, saw his barbs as aimed at the mass of newly elected GOP lawmakers. But his office claimed he wasn't talking about new Republicans but about general congressional ignorance regarding trade issues.
Whatever.
When abroad, pols have a duty to remember they're representing the country. There's a time and place for political gripes, but it's not while on foreign soil.
After all, not all foreigners are friendly. And they take notes. Citing alleged US weaknesses -- in over-the-top language, no less -- degrades the nation's image and provides verbal ammo against it. That's why pols have long honored the rule: "Politics stops at the water's edge."
Not to mention that Hizzoner's coarseness is also politically self-defeating: The mayor, after all, will have to work with Congress. Lawmakers may recall his smug, hostile tone when the city files requests, such as for anti-terror funds.

The most disgusting thing is how these commissars can make pronouncements with no criticism from what’s left of their media; banning smoking in workplaces has some validity, but when you get into people’s diets and such, without being vilified daily, I don’t get it. I understand there are many people in his fiefdom that don’t speak English, but somehow I just don’t see Texans taking it well it their governor wanted to ban beef or the like...
