The modest one-liners of the dangers of smoking, now featured on cigarette packs, may soon turn into gory images and messages that will cover nearly half the pack.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration unveiled 36 jarring labels Wednesday aimed at escalating efforts to warn smokers of the fatal consequences of cigarette smoking. These labels represent the agency's exercise of its new authority over tobacco products and the most significant change in cigarette warnings since companies were forced to add the mandatory Surgeon General's warning in 1965.
Some of the proposed images include a man smoking from a tracheotomy hole, a cadaver labeled to show it died from lung disease, and a pained infant exposed to smoke.

Will any of these diseased lungs ever be worth as much as a Honus Wagner card?
why do i sense a valuable collector item opportunity?
get the complete set !!
Stupid and more stupid! People that want to smoke will do so. Seems like they also think that advertisements effect elections regardless of their politics...geez.
If they really want to (as they seem to) ban cigarettes, just make them illegal. Let’s see just how that goes over with 20% of the electorate.
Why not a Hammer and Sickle or a Swastika too
As soon as abortion clinics post billboards with photos of their product.
How about pictures of aborted foetuses on bottles of RU-486?
Okay, if they’re so bad for you, why are they still legal? Oh, that’s right: The tax money!!
Does this mean since I don’t smoke, I’ll live forever?
>> How about pictures of aborted foetuses on bottles of RU-486?
Good one.
Soooo...what happens if everyone stops smoking in response to these ads and then all that wonderful cigarette tax revenue that states depend so much on suddenly goes away?
As much as I hate to admit it, the governnment’s demonization of smokers and institution of heavy taxes on cigarette smoking have succeeded at cutting the smoking rate over the years. Making cigs illegal wouldn’t have accomplished the same thing. Smoking isn’t something that’s a social taboo like cocaine or heroin; tobacco is thought of by most as simply a dirty habit.
This would be ok with me if abortion clinics were also forced to post pictures of aborted fetuses.
Rather attractive. Skull and crossbones are a popular fashion motif these days too.
That pack will attract the heavy metal crowd. I see sales of cigarettes increasing with this new campaign.
How about a picture of Obama sucking on a Camel. Menthol, of course. If necessary, make him up to look like a Zombie.
Whoa, wait a minute! Are they saying cigarettes are bad for your health?!
