SAN DIEGO (AP) A Coast Guard official says one of two tugboats tasked with pulling a disabled cruise ship to San Diego didn't have enough power and was forced to turn back.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Jetta Disco says a Mexican company has sent a third tugboat to the scene but authorities are trying to determine whether it would be better to leave the one tugboat alone while it slowly makes headway.

Instead of lavish buffets, passengers on the Carnival Splendor were subsisting on Spam, Pop Tarts and canned crabmeat flown in by Navy helicopters.
People were trying to keep their spirits up by singing, socializing and playing cards, said passenger David Zambrano, who managed to get cell phone service Wednesday and called his employer, Denver TV station 9NEWS.
The ship's bars, casinos, pools and the upper deck were closed. Rooms in the interior of the ship were pitch black and passengers propped open their doors to let in air and emergency lighting from the hallways.
"So really, all we're going is just kind of hanging out on a boat waiting for the next mealtime," Zambrano said.
But when mealtime comes, there's a two-hour wait for food, which is cold.

the Navy could drop them some turkeys. OH, never mind. LOL
P!ssed off, hungry AND drunk???!
Not a good combination....
I just received a call from my wife who is on the ship. She said "This is a cruise from HELL!"
So for those of you that would rather be there, than at work, you need to throw away your crack pipes.
She said there is no light in her cabin, toilet only got restored yesterday and stinks beyond belief. People are hoarding food, taking platefuls.
The one tug that was pulling them just lost an engine, so they are going even slower.
She had no idea that we knew everything that was going on regarding the USS Reagan, tugs, etc.
I would have asked more but she needs to conserve her cell battery because there is no where to plug in for power.
Can't they get out and push?
I suppose so, but is there any reason to believe there are boat bombers off the coast of San Diego?
My wife and I took this exact same cruise on the Splendor in October 2009. My daughter and her husband went on the same cruise just this September.
We had a GREAT time and so did my daughter. The crew was very friendly and accommodating and the food at the formal dinners was fantastic but the buffets were “pretty good”. We had quite the experience on our cruise as we were due to sail as a hurricane was bearing down on the west coast of Mexico. We had a pretty bumpy ride at first and they substituted Mazatlan for Ensinada in order to allow the hurricane to pass through the Mazatlan area. Not a very good trade!
With that said, now that I have been on a Carnival and a Royal Caribbean cruise, I would choose the RC cruise but I wouldn’t turn down a Carnival cruise if the opportunity presented itself.
I am sure they got some Government cheese too.
The USS Ronald Reagan has been the supply line for this disabled cruise liner....last night on "couric"...she just could not bring herself to say "Ronald Reagan"...it was "an aircraft carrier is helping with relief".....
(yeh, I know...I was just walking buy a tv in a store at the time...no way will I have couric on at home)
I always keep some MRE’s around the house, they’re pretty tasty! Maybe they’ve improved recently, or maybe I got the NAVY ones :)
“There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today.”
Food is that short?
Even if you have lots of power, you can only tow as fast as the hull speed of the tug.
Not that I know of... but it’s not a big stretch to assume that there’s more than one cell operating that could slap together a boat, some ‘splosives, and do it.
Another reason they would keep the location secret is that it is ~also~ the location of the USS Ronald Reagan for the time being. They’re on scene ferrying supplies over. So... no sense pin-pointing them.
Ramming speed...
Where is Obummer. Why is he not saving these Americans.
I am surprised that banditos have not boarded the ship yet.
You can bet that the passengers will have big lawsuits against Carnival ant the digital pictures and mpeg4 video will doom this vessel for carnival. The social media aspect will be brutal for Carnival.
Emergency lights on a ship are connected to.....
the emergency generator.
The new ones can be pretty tasty. The first ones from the mid 80s are what earned them the nicknames "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians" and "Meals, Rarely Edible." The pork patties and dehydrated fruit coctail were especially disgusting. In a cruel twist, the Army packed the only good thing in the MRE line, applesauce, in with the pork patties. The coffee was also undrinkable, a brown powder in a brown paper pouch, best consumed as a shot followed by some water from your canteen.
"Oh, Tugger! Tugger, the world won't be as bright without ya, mate! Give it to me straight, doctor! Will Tugger live?! Tell me the truth!"
You didn’t get the MRE’s with the Starbucks Instant?
