Military officials remain stumped about the mysterious projectile spotted in the sky off the Southern California coast, but aerospace experts said it appeared to be an errant missile launch.
Pentagon officials are looking into what they have called an "unexplained contrail" after a KCBS news helicopter shot video late Monday of a luminous point hurtling through the sky followed by a long vapor trail.
SNIP
The lack of explanation from the Pentagon makes Caceres believe it may have been a mistake -- perhaps a defense exercise launched by accident.

In any case, if this were a planned event, military officials would have known weeks in advance.
“There is a safety routine that the government goes through,” Ellison said. “Everything needs to be cleared away. They’re not going to take any risks.”
Looks like Clinton just found where he lost those launch codes.
What is fascinating is that it is now being claimed that it is a contrail. And the evidence is pretty compelling that it is.
What this means to me is that the two look a lot alike and even experts can be fooled. I’m assuming it was a missile launch, though, since “they” said it was.
Yes, I’m confused... how do you “accidentally” launch a missile, did they trip over something?
Hope it landed in Tehran
We have no launch faclities 35 miles west of LA.... just a lot of deep water.
Well, its clear its a contrail... but its a contrail from an outbound missile, a very large one at that.
In the video you can clearly see the glow of the engines at the source point of the plume.
not supposed to be mistakes...I remember seeing something simular in the early 80’s but it crossed several states. they never reported what that was either.
Assuming it was a missile, if you don't know who launched it, how in Hades can you know what the intent was?!
See silentknight’s post #213 here. I’m thinking it’s case closed.

I just saw it on the local TV station. Sure looks like a large missile to me.
which begs the question: did it go into outer space or go into orbit. if not where did it land?
I’ve never been on a sub, or anything else that fires a missile, but I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that there’s no way in hell something that big can be launched by mistake.
I’m SURE there is a process that must be deliberately followed. This thing didn’t go off by someone hitting a ‘wrong button’ or dropping something on a keyboard. No way....
OOPS!
Obama’s fault.
The North Koreans just got it backwards. That’s all.
Now that I think about it, “errant” could be very different from “accidental”. But it still is very strange.
One thing we will know is that we won’t get the truth.
Did anybody ask NORAD if they were tracking it? Where did it land? If it is ballistic it must follow the parabola and land somewhere. It certainly didn’t resemble something like a shuttle launch where it goes UP in a hurry. That contrail was bending in the boost phase, right?
