Since her arrival in India on Saturday, US First Lady Michelle Obamas 1960s look has become the talk of the town. On Sunday morning, Michelle visited a school in Mumbai with husband, President Barack Obama, wearing an outfit reminiscent of 1960s style icon, former first lady, Jackie Kennedy. On her arrival in India, she wore a grey silk tunic, which was akin to the 1960s styles of designer labels Chanel, Dior and Yves Saint Laurent.
She has been dressing right on trend with these 60s- inspired looks. Like the floral printed skirt she wore as she played hopscotch. The thin belt with it was also vintage, says designer Jenjum Gadi.
Its not just her clothes, even her hairdo is toeing the vintage line. The slight bouffant type volume on top is undoubtedly a modern interpretation of the big hairdos from the 60s, says hair stylist Rod Anker.
Her style in India has been a mix of old world charm and comfort. Its her own original interpretation of it, says designer Suneet Varma. He points that while her outfits are not as sharply tailored as Jackie Os, they are equally glamorous.
So, if Jackie wore pencil skirts and Chanel jackets, Mrs O has gone in for easier silhouettes like skirts, and day dresses. This has also helped make the Indian public be at ease with her, adds Varma.
And, like every other true-blue fashionista, Michelle also mixes designer pieces with affordable labels. One of her outfits on Saturday, included a moss olive lace top from pret label J Crew, which costs approximately Rs 5,000.
The fact that she doesnt always wear designer labels is why she has become such a style icon, says jewellery designer Pieter Erasmus.
What stars have to say about President Barack Obama
Cant I just invite Obama home? Im a great chef, Id cook some great Indian food for him Kareena Kapoor
Its wonderful to have Obama come and speak to the youth...His Taj speech was dignified and sensitive Rahul Bose
Id like to ask him about recession, it affects everyone the man in New York to a dacoit in Meerut Neha Dhupia
Embarrassing
“Is that code for Salvation Army trash bin?”
I thought that was always her “style”? :)
She asked for it with those Jackie-O comparisons.
I missed his show today, I was helping out my daughter. Their daughter was born on November 1st (She absenteed voted for conservatives), their first daughter, making this our 8th grand baby. The oldest of our grandkids is 4 1/2. It’s been a mini baby boom in our family. :)
I’d have loved to hear that comment.
Frumpy....not classy
Weight Watchers, because it works!
It is vintage. My grandmother (deceased over 30 years) wore it to my grandfather’s funeral.
As a Midwestern farmer, she didn’t know it was high style.
bah dah bing!
Man...that is one ugly mermaid.
Should read: “Mrs. Obama goes Shabby Unchic”
You must be in Grandma Heaven!!!!
I really, really, really am jealous of those two women on the left. I’d love to look like that. BUT, (I am 51) I don’t look anything like that woman on the right. Look at her poor posture. If she’d at least do something with her shoulders it would be an improvement. She looks like she slept in that outfit. And she’s the First Lady!
The dress looks like that getup that Dr. Evil wears on those Austin Powers movies....
There are so many new people in our family, it’s really hard to keep it all straight. This summer, I broke my ankle picking raspberries in a fairly big ravine. So, my daughters rallied around me, came over to help, you know, clean, laundry, cook and all that. They all brought their kids. Which I absolutely love to have over. The problem was, 6 grandkids under 4, toys everywhere, screaming and fighting, the usual normal stuff, magnified. I’m trying to manage crutches and stairs, and toys and kids, and pain. And the fact I couldn’t even get myself a glass of water. It was quite stressful.
I loved everyone’s support, but, I had to kick everyone out a week later after I became more mobile. I needed to rest from all the help. I’m 100% recovered, but it was an experience.
And yes, I am in Grandma heaven, God has blessed my family. I’ve raised 3 conservative daughters, who married conservative men, and are raising conservative kids. Thanks!
Well, she does have Jackie’s superiority comples, as well as her shallowness, down.
