U.S. Sikh Groups Decry Screenings
The New York Times ^ | 06 Nov 2010 | KEN MAGUIRE

Three national Sikh advocacy and civil rights organizations have said federal transportation officials plan to always search turbans at airport screening stations, even if wearers pass through state-of-the-art body imaging scanners.

The groups are calling on their constituents to lobby Congress and the Transportation Security Administration to overturn what they said was an “unjust policy.”

Officials from the Sikh Coalition, United Sikhs and the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund went public on Friday about their meeting several weeks ago with representatives of the Department of Homeland Security and the T.S.A.

“All of us jointly feel there are definitely some elements of racial profiling here,” said Jasjit Singh, associate director of the legal defense fund, a civil rights group in Washington.

Hansdeep Singh, a senior staff lawyer for United Sikhs, based in New York, said the meeting in Washington was arranged to hear about how new “advanced imaging technology” scanners would affect Sikhs, who had hoped the devices would eliminate the need for extra screening that they say they are subjected to at airports.

“We went in there with high hopes,” Mr. Singh said.

But the Sikhs said they were told that the turbans will be treated “as a per se anomaly,” Mr. Singh said. That will give security officers the discretion they already have — to conduct additional screening of the turbans, which they usually do already, according to the Sikhs.

They said T.S.A. officials declined, because of security reasons, to tell them whether the scanner is incapable of seeing through a turban, which typically has layers of fabric.

When selected for further screening, Sikhs have the option of having their turbans patted down by a T.S.A. officer or patting down their own turbans, after which their hands are inspected for trace chemicals.

Every group feels they are unfairly picked on and singled out. I’m so sick of them all.

Can people also opt to pat down their own private parts and then be scanned for trace chemicals?

FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION
GUIDE TO CONCEALABLE WEAPONS
2003

FORWARD
In the wake of the September 11, 2001, airline hijackings the
FIREARMS AND TOOLMARKS UNIT of the FBI LABORATORY
has started a collection of small and easily concealed knives.
This is the first installment of a continuing effort to collect and
distribute information on knives that otherwise may be
dismissed as non threatening items. Many of the knives in this
collection were commercially purchased and typically can be
bought for less than $20. Some of these knives are common
items found in most homes and offices. You will notice also that
some are made of a plastic material, making them less likely to
be considered a weapon. Each of these tools was designed to
cut and is fully functional in that respect. Whether used to cut
paper, cardboard, or other material, these knives should be
treated as potentially dangerous weapons. Each knife is shown
with an accompanying scale for size reference and many
include an X-ray photograph to show how these weapons might
appear if placed in luggage and passed through a scanning
device.

I thought they were going to have the program where you could get checked out and then not have to do all that if you flew a lot. What happened to that?

Too many want victim status in an attempt to cash in. The way to cure terrorism is to identify those guilty of it and kill them on sight. And that doesn't mean some grandmother at the airport.

If they go throught the naked machine why would the turban need further inspection? Don’t the naked machines work?

They get to pat down their own turbans? Can anyone else do a self-pat down or are they getting special treatment?

When it comes to the TSA, one group is unfairly picked on and single out: travellers. Insofar as the Sikhs may be able to dial back the TSA's powers, I support them.

Sikhs are the Good Guys. Detail search a turban? Hell, if he was in my line, I'd ask him if he wanted to fly the plane, then wave him through.

Another of the requirements observed by Sikhs is that they carry a knife, called a kirpan, on their person at all times. Fine with me. Some of these blades are strikingly beautiful as well as practical. Air marshals? Who needs 'em.

If there were (observant) Sikhs on those planes, 9-11 would not have happened.

ALL Americans - and Sikhs are NOT Muslims - are being unfairly inconvenienced due to the government’s FAILURE to identify and ELIMINATE the REAL source of our problems - MUSLIMS.

ALL Muslims should be banned from entering the U.S. and those already here should be deported.
