Its no secret that the marquee in front of Delta Electronics has turned heads in the past but Thursday the sign did more than that. The signs message sparked a fury of phone calls and e-mails to GwdToday from readers who said this time the signs message had gone too far.
On Thursday, passersby of the small electronics store located on Montague Avenue, could see a message on the marquee that read: So who needs to go to th back of th bus now?!!
Public reaction to the sign is varied. Some have decried the signs message as racist and bigoted, others support the sign and its message.
His store, his sign. You don't like it don't shop there. It's called the 1st amendment, said Nicole Ginn Smith of Greenwood.
Tiara Riser feels different. It's not just racist, this company always seems to put up demeaning and disrespectful signs. Regardless if it is their right or not, it's rude, she said.
The stores owner Bob Bruce says the sign in not intended to be racist but is in response to a statement made by President Obama on October 25 during one of his mid-term election campaign stops in Rhode Island.
President Obama said to a crowd at the Rhode Island Convention Center "we can't have special interests sitting shotgun. We gotta have middle class families up in front. We don't mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back."
On Thursday and Friday Bruce received visits and numerous phone calls from citizens who were angry because they believed the signs message was racist. Bruce responded by telling callers to Google the presidents October 25th remarks and by posting a sign on the door of his business explaining the marquee's message.

Double standard of course.
That’s right.
Obama said the Republicans could come along for the ride but they had to sit in the back of the bus.
So I think the sign is perfect. In every way.
Frickin’ Gingers!
Well, the store owner simply repeats what the president has said recently.
If it makes any difference, Obama did not say bus. He stopped at back.
They weren’t crying racism when Obama said Republicans could get in the back of the bus so they can just shut up now.
Same goes for all their other hypocrisy, like how we have to be bi-partisan now, but they thought it was cute when Hussein said “I won”.
Gingers = Reggins?
So, unless bashing a political party by telling them to go to the back of the bus is suddenly a “hate crime,” I'm afraid the cheek squeezing, knee knocking libs are going to have to back off.
It's probably rude; but a legitimate retort.
okay
lol
great sign and since he owns it, even better.
Fantastic sign and wonderful explanation..
Our sign is not intended to be racist! It is a reaction to a comment made by President Obama on 25th October. The notice goes on to say, While he claims he wants to work together for the good of the country, he has spent the last two weeks demeaning and castigating Republicans at every chance hes gotten. But today (10-25-10) it reached a new low. He used a racially charged pejorative that no other national leaders would ever be able to get by with as far as the Elite Media is concerned.
I believe earlier in his remarks while Republican bashing and blaming them for the economy, he made reference to taking the middle class on his proverbial bus ride.
So later, when he said that “Republicans could come along for the ride, they’d just have to sit in the back....”, I think we all got it.
Actually, he just said, “Get in the back” and it was another car reference.
However, Glenn Beck and his crew said, “The dems ride in the trunk!”
Give 10 minutes and watch this. They know how to gloat.

If I lived in the area Delta Electronics would get all of my business.
it’s not rude.
It’s right on point.
yes he did but he still said BACK.
