People such as me are often accused of wanting to return to the 19th century. But, if the New York Times is right about a new trend, some on the Left want to go back to the Middle Ages. What is that trend? Avoiding soap, deodorant, and even bathing regularly. Today, though, it’s often for environmental reasons.
It seems that top-notch Western hygiene has now joined SUVs, Wal-Mart, tobacco (not the wacky kind — it’s in fashion), guns, McDonald’s, and white males in the Museum of Politically Incorrect Persons, Places, and Things.
For example, Guardian writer Kira Cochrane tells us about 51-year-old environmentalist Donnachadh McCarthy, who boasts that he’s gotten his water consumption down to about “20 litres a day,” that he’s “as clean as everyone else,” and that he’s trying to reduce his “carbon footprint.”
If I were Donnachadh, I’d be more concerned about my stink footprint.
McCarthy seems to bemoan what Cochrane calls the fetishizing of extreme cleanliness and says that when he was a lad “the normal thing was to bathe once a week.” I don’t know, perhaps he spent his youth as part of a head-hunting tribe in Papua New Guinea, but during my stateside childhood in the 1970s, a daily shower was expected. I mean, even in 1950s programs such as Leave it to Beaver, the little boy who tried to avoid his nightly bath was often the stuff of comedy fare.

What about saving water by not brushing their teeth? Every little bit counts while trying to “save the planet”.
It goes along with the success of ‘green’ jobs.
A biology prof at college only bathed once a week. By Friday we all dreaded having to go ask him a question, he was pretty ripe.
I don’t care if it’s un-PC, I refuse to go around smelling like a Russian.

This is just a sub-trend inside of a larger back-to-the-caves movement among the environazis, most of whom, by the way, will NOT be sharing the caves with us, once they push us into them.
At least they don’t ENVISION themselves as living in the fetid slave-camps with us. They envision themselves being the MASTERS, living in mansions (oops, ecologically friendly buildings ala Al Gore).
Of course, their vision is flawed. Most of them WILL be in the slave camps with us plebes... only the very top players, like Al Gore, for example, will actually get to live in mansions.
But it doesn’t matter. The army of environazis will continue to love their masters even as they become enslaved by them.
It’s only we plebes who will complain.

My sister’s family hosted an exchange student from France. Her two kids also spent a summer in France while they were in highschool. All of them were appalled by the total lack of hygiene on the part of the french. MY sister couldn’t wait to get Francois out of her house. He wouldn’t shower, wouldn’t wash his clothes, and wouldn’t use deodorant. And people think WE should be like THEM?
I’d like to tell him that the way he can ultimately redeem himself of the sin of creating CO2 and be the greenest of them all is for him to cease breathing.
We were so poor in my childhood we all had holes in our shoes. But my Mother was a clean addict. She washed clothes and hung them on the line outside even in the cold and ironed everything. She said our clothes may be worn but they would be clean. Everyone had showers every day.

I met a liberal chick at a party once.
She had long, thick, shiny, black hair.
It was under her arms.
I know several extreme enviro/liberals who do this sort of thing. They will only flush the toilet with number 2 and they only bathe once or twice a week (at most). Their kids have the greasiest hair you have ever seen and dirt under their fingernails. Disgusting to me. Don’t even ask me about the women: no hair color, no make-up, Birkenstock sandals... Yuck.
Not bathing is for the newly retarded and plague infested, lice ridden morons.
