While the Republican gains in the House and Senate are grabbing the most headlines, the most significant results on Tuesday came in state legislatures where Republicans wiped the floor with Democrats.
Republicans picked up 680 seats in state legislatures, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures -- the most in the modern era. To put that number in perspective: In the 1994 GOP wave, Republicans picked up 472 seats. The previous record was in the post-Watergate election of 1974, when Democrats picked up 628 seats.
The GOP gained majorities in at least 14 state house chambers. They now have unified control -- meaning both chambers -- of 26 state legislatures.
That control is a particularly bad sign for Democrats as they go into the redistricting process. If the GOP is effective in gerrymandering districts in many of these states, it could eventually lead to the GOP actually expanding its majority in 2012.

I'm all for it. I've been calling for the repeal of the 17th amendment for years. The fact that the senate was appointed by the states was a fundamental part of our federal republic that was destroyed by the 17th amendment. How many unfunded mandates would you be seeing if they all had to go through a senate the was beholden to state legislooters?
I hate the blame game, but Obama used/uses it on Bush, so the Republicans better be prepared to use it (honestly) on Obama and the Dems. Obama has left the ‘new’ Congress with greater debt than anyone would have imagined.

More specifically, Republicans took 25% of House seats held by Dems away from them (61/247). They’ve picked up 6 Senate seats (so far) out of the 18 Dem seats up for re-election (33%).

I’m disappointed that Republicans didn’t take back the Senate, but Krauthammer is probably right: this actually is better for Republicans since otherwise Obama could run against a “do-nothing” Congress in 2012. Moreover, given the disparity in D vs. R Senate seats up for grabs in 2012, GOP almost certainly will make further gains that year.
All in all, a VERY good night. Of course, it would have been even better had the blow-out been so devastating that it convinced Obama to resign for the sake of the party. My guess is the only resignation we’ll see is Nancy Pelosi’s: she’s got “grandma” work to do.

Along with repeal of the 16th amendment and abolish the IRS. Implement a flat tax or the fair tax and we would see the economy explode in no time.

FL just abolished gerrymandering so the GOP won’t draw the lines.
Two democrats will lose seats in MI and OH because one seat must be eliminated. Incidentally, the Democrats have to zero out a seat in Massachusetts in of all places, because of population decline.
Fewer Democrats to be elected. Has a nice ring to it!

I’d like to think the new Republican majorities would un-Gerrymander some of those crazy districts, but I know THAT won’t happen.
I like it. Wonder if there will be any court challenges to the population in California... I would expect that any significant population gain there would be the result of counting illegals.
