alifornia Republicans woke up Wednesday with a political hangover. Nationally, they celebrated the GOP's taking control of Congress, but their dismal showing in California gave them a lingering headache.
Many of them wondered how they missed the national wave - and differed on which direction to go next.
They lost nearly every statewide office, drubbed by double digits in most of the races. Meg Whitman couldn't win the governorship despite straddling the political middle and spending a record $160 million. Carly Fiorina couldn't roust Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, despite tacking right and exploiting Boxer's low approval ratings.
For months, party officials boasted that their ticket was its most diverse ever. It included a pro-choice former corporate executive (Whitman); an anti-abortion ex-CEO (Fiorina); a pair of very conservative legislators (Tony Strickland and Mimi Walters); a not-so-conservative Latino who had been appointed to the job he sought (Lt. Gov. Abel Maldonado); and a charismatic African American former NFL player turned businessman (Damon Dunn).
All of them lost....
Part of the reason, as Fiorina said in her concession speech Wednesday in Irvine, is that "we could not overcome the (2.3 million) registration advantage the Democrats have, particularly in Los Angeles."
Whitman started making in-roads among Latino voters by spending $12 million in Spanish-language advertising and outreach. But any goodwill evaporated in October after Whitman struggled to handle revelations that she had employed - and fired - an undocumented immigrant as her housekeeper for nine years.
"It's a white party" in an increasingly diverse state, said Robert Huckfeldt,... "What you saw in this election was a lot of partisan voters coming home to their party."
Every Republican paid for the Legislature's agreement to raise taxes as part of the 2009 state budget deal. "It damaged the brand,"

CA has their corrupt dem machine of unions and paid-for politicians in place, they’re ready for the rapid descent into becoming north Mexico.
They might as well elect leaders of drug cartels next.

Note to the rest of the nation: Before your pols sign off on any state bailouts, you should take a DANG good look at just what kind of ruinous fiscal malfeasance you'll be aiding and abetting...
This was not a Republican loss in California.
This was the end of California as Californians have known it.
They will run out of money—and then Governor Brown can explain to them why material things are not really important.
They always have been....
When I lived in SoCal...I'd listen to them. And they swerved into the truth enough I guess...to keep listening. But they kept pissing my off...and I quit listening...long before I left SoCal.
Then you have the largest government employee union base in the country that easily out spend Whitman. They always send hundreds of millions into campaigns and buy lots of ads making emotional pleas that especially the women in our state fall for every time.
I think there is a built in automatic 39% of the vote from all the people on welfare or workfare with the government, so when there is an election, all the Democrats have to do is get 11% +1 vote. The others have to get 50% + 1 vote.
The stupidity or selfishness of the voters here almost outshine the illegal immigration problems of the state.
You have people here that vote the demise of business here and are willing to vote themselves higher taxes.
Now IMO the votes like that are from people who don't make money. As more and more leave the state that do have money, the pain will work it's way down IMO and the people of the dole will have their hands out all the way down to the dust IMO.
This is actually good. When California gets to be even more of a sinkhole they can’t point to one conservative to blame. Yay, epic fail!

I agree. This is a legitimate instance where the finger is pointed directly at the electorate. California had an opportunity to elect some very good Republican candidates. We can argue all day as to whether they were “the best” candidates, but they were very good Republican candidates nonetheless. The fact is California chose to swim in their own filth and re-elected governor Moonbeam. It’s on them.
I see no way out for California now. Therefore, NO federal bailout of California!
Commufornia is a lost cause. May it die a slow agonizing death. Oh wait! That is what’s happening. Beam me up Moonbeam.......
“California has crossed the tipping point where way too many voters are on the public teateither dependency programs or public workers.”
You are exactly correct. California is way past the point on no return. Adding to the problem with public employees and public teat suckers is the explosion of the Mexican population who vote more than two to one Democrat. Mexican immigrants (most of whom are illegal) and their children are big time teat suckers. Somebody should ask Karl Blove how adding millions of illegal immigrants to the voter roles can possibly help the Republican party.
As soon as I retire, I will. It will not change till the economy collaspes. I think that when all the welfare queens no longer get their welfare checks, the state will explode in violence. I hope to be gone by then.
Next time there’s a wave, California conservatives need to run a conservative Hispanic.
Yep. It's an entitlement state. Leave it alone. It'll commit suicide by itself. NY state is as good as dead, too.
Man, Karl Rove hasn’t been our friend, has he?
And yet there he is every night, his fat face on Fox News, lambasting our elected candidate AFTER she won the Republican primary here in Delaware, an act of so little class it defies description.
We got to get rid of Rove; he’s the leader of the Blue Blood GOP Ruling Class and soon we will have to do battle with that crew.
Already Trent Lott’s coming out of the woodwork.
But now the Republicans have the key to Obama's "stash"!
Deja vu....
