Luciano: Child’s death raises questions
Peoria Journal Star ^ | 11/04/2010 | PHIL LUCIANO

Layers of mystery continue to twist around the sad, bizarre case of little Aryanna Inman, who died in a Macomb house fire last week.

The 2-year-old’s death seems all the more peculiar in light of two new pieces of information I confirmed Wednesday:

* It turns out her family was hit by not just one, not just two, but a remarkable three fires at three different rental homes this year.

* The state has removed her surviving brother from the care of her father and his girlfriend. In fact, child-welfare workers began investigating a neglect charge regarding the children’s home situation a week before the fatal fire.

...

Aryanna is the daughter of James Inman and Heather Inman; they also have a son, Edwin, who is almost 5. The pair live separately, she in Colchester, seven miles west of Macomb. For at least seven months, James Inman, 25, had been living with the children, along with his girlfriend, Stephanie Spencer.

...

About 7:30 a.m. Oct. 25, a passerby made a fire call regarding smoke pouring from one of the residence’s upstairs windows, which led to the children’s bedroom. Aryanna was in the bedroom alone; according to some witnesses, she briefly appeared in the window, as if looking for help or a way out. Also present were three adults downstairs: Stephanie Spencer, Barbara Spencer and a visitor.

Police arrived to find the adults had escaped safely. Two police officers tried to climb onto a porch roof and bust open a window, but the heat kept them away.

Firefighters arrived and ran a hose upstairs, where they knocked down a nasty fire sprouting from the girl’s mattress. They found Aryanna unresponsive on the floor between her bed and the window.

...

Paramedics could find no pulse but resuscitated her. She was whisked to a local hospital, then to the burn unit at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Severely burned, she died there early that afternoon.

...

Inman and Stephanie Spencer did not return a call for comment left at the motel at which they are staying. I tried to reach Barbara and Michael Spencer, who had been staying at another motel; however, they have left that motel and I could not find them. Further, I have been unable to reach the children’s mother, Heather Inman; likewise with landlord Wilson.

...

Odd how all the BOYS and ADULTS managed to get out SAFLEY.

The little GIRL was so “lucky”.

When you read the article it almost reads like a Twilight Zone script, so very weird and extremely sad.

Horrible.

Another factor in common is that the three fires occurred in rented rooms in buildings owned by the same landlord.

Hopefully the authorities are really looking into this and can figure out what happened.

I would also speculate that the kids could possibly be playing with matches. But the girl, in whose mattress this last fire started, is only two. Old enough to play with matches? Maybe.

Definitely needs careful investigation.

Very sad indeed, and very suspicious.

Just a tiny kid living with Dad and his “girlfriend” while Mom is off somewhere else. I’m betting that if this unlovely family hadn’t killed her this way, they would have made her wish she were dead later on.

It took 3 fires to awaken the agency from its slumber?

Very suspicious that Dad ran to safety and left his Baby Girl inside.

I hope the local authorities investigate all the adults thoroughly.
