Washington (CNN) -- His party got its clock cleaned in Tuesday's midterm elections, but President Barack Obama still remains competitive in some hypothetical 2012 presidential election matchups, especially against Sarah Palin, a new poll shows.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday also indicates that at the unofficial start of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the field of possible contenders appears wide open with no front-runner.
Twenty-one percent of Republicans say they would most likely support 2008 GOP White House candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for their party's 2012 presidential nomination, according to the poll.
The number is 20 percent for another 2008 Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Fourteen percent say they support Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, with 12 percent backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia.
The remaining candidates, whose names were all in single digits, are led by Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who also ran for the GOP presidential nomination the last time around, followed by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.
The poll's release comes as Santorum visits New Hampshire to give a speech about the midterm election results and the future of the Republican party. No one has yet to announce a bid for the GOP nomination.
In a possible general election showdown, Obama leads Palin 52-44 percent among all registered voters.

Jindal needs more seasoning first.
He needs to win his second term convincingly in 2012.
He does not need to be running for President yet.
AFTER he successfully completes his second term, then he should consider running. That would be 2016.
Palin needs to continue building up the good guy side of the fence. She is a great selector of people.
Don’t know that she should run this next election. I think she should select and position the candidate who should win.
And that candidate should be a top general.
I agree on Rubio. I wasn’t happy with his comments, but I wouldn’t disqualify him based upon them alone. Also, he was clearly anti-illegal. His concerns (while not totally valid, IMO) were civil liberties based, not pro-illegal.
Once we get to see him as a senator for a while, we will have a much better idea of what he is really like. I am very optimistic that he will be an outstanding, conservative senator.
Obamao should move back to Kenya, and apply for an assistant dog catcher job, until he is prepared to run for top position. Now that he has been exposed as a fraud, he should try a political career that better suits his capabilities.
Exactly! I want a conservative...period. White, black, brown, male or female. I don't care as long as they're authenically conservative.

As far as Palin goes she is simply unelectable, yes, I don't hate her, I love her, I think she would make a FANTASTIC POTUS. But independents are very weary of her mainly due to the MSM attacking her (Katie Couric and that pig from Saturday Night Live).
And the Sarah Palin candidates did not fare well on election night. Angle, O'Donnell and Miller all lost. Nikki Haley barely squeaked by.
This is a center right country. We can't nominate someone who will scare away independent voters otherwise we will get another four years of Zero.
The headline should be something like: “Palin still polling well after Media throws EVERYTHING at her and her family”.
I mean come on CNN, if you want to discourage Palin supporters at least make up a lower number.
Why why why is Huckabee even being considered???? I even prefer Mitt over Huck for God’s sake.

Somebody needs to bash Huckabee with the parolee murders early and often. He needs to be out of the running, the sooner the better. He’s unelectable.
As to who else...I just hope for someone with a strong administrative background and understanding of business/commerce - preferably a former governor. I think most Senators, who have been in Washington for a while, have grown isolated from the real world.

I’m not going to feel any better till I see the janitors at the White House dumping the Obama’s junk on the lawn.
My Dad had a 63 Rambler. Three on the tree and it wouldn't die! After that, it was all down hill for AMC. Rebel, Hornet, Gremlin, Pacer... ugh! I can't get those awful images out of my head!
Huckabee isn't really a conservative.
Romney is moderately conservative, at least fiscally, but not a great candidate.
We need better Republican candidates this time around, or we are going to have another election where conservatives just aren't motivated by any of the choices.
The tea party movement gives me hope that real conservatives might get enough support to win the primaries, instead of a field of "moderates" all trying to say they are conservatives despite their records.
If...and a BIG IF...Palin did go in as an Independent, she will suck votes from both the GOP and Dems.
And so the assault on Palin continues apace.
A Myth candidacy would take Obamacare out of play for the Republicans as a campaign issue and this site ain’t the place for a Liberal-Lite candidate like him.
I love Palin, she is incredible and her time may come, but she is way too polarizing right now...no thanks to the incessant media bashing...and I fear she may ignite their base when Obama is all abut dead in the water.
I think we just need a solid, energized conservative ticket and we win. We don;t need to do them any favors. I like Pawlenty/Bachmann or Jindal/Bachmann.

Election doesn’t end major discord for GOP, Obama

WASHINGTON – Barely an hour after President Barack Obama invited congressional Republicans to post-election talks to work together on major issues, the Senate’s GOP leader had a blunt message: His party’s main goal is denying Obama re-election.
In a sign that combat and the 2012 elections rather than compromise could mark the next two years, Sen. Mitch McConnell on Thursday called for Senate votes to repeal or erode Obama’s signature health care law, to cut spending and to shrink government.
“The only way to do all these things it is to put someone in the White House who won’t veto any of these things,” McConnell said in a speech to the conservative Heritage Foundation.
The Senate Republican leader’s confrontational tone was in sharp contrast to the posture Obama took Wednesday in the face of a new GOP-controlled House and Republican gains in the Senate. Obama followed up Thursday morning by inviting Republican and Democratic congressional leaders for talks on Nov. 18 and challenging his own Cabinet to make Washington work better.
“I want us to talk substantively about how we can move the American people’s agenda forward,” Obama said of the upcoming meeting with lawmakers. “It’s not just going to be a photo op.”
