Before Republican Pat Toomey was elected to take over Arlen Specter's U.S. Senate seat, there was no shortage of warnings by Democrats that he was too conservative for middle-of-the-road Pennsylvania politics.
In fact, during the hard-fought contest with Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, Democrats even dug up clips of two well-known conservatives former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch questioning Toomey's ability to get elected to the Senate.

Like the Dems said:
WE WON

Toomey is NOT a moderate. He was always a reliable pro-life vote in the House. He was my Congressman so I know. He was the CEO for Club for Growth, for crying out loud. That’s one of the most conservative think tanks in D.C.
Can’t you folks see that you are being manipulated by the DBM?
The new bomb du jour of the DBM is to run pieces on newly elected CONSERVATIVES and charge them with not really being conservative. Then the left picks up quotes from the article, circulates them and the premise becomes gospel truth. it’s pure propaganda.
Don’t believe them. You all have access to the internet or you wouldn’t be here. Look up Club for Growth and see what they stand for.
We’re smart enough not to be taken in by this junk.
Not really
Casey was a complete buffon
Ant political figure can be knocked
And the dems made sure they Philly turnout was high
Plus idiot independents and dems who voted for Santorum on pro life issues etc voted on Casey’s name because of his father
It was the stupid voters
You don’t lose 59-41 just because of the factors you cited. Santorum maintained a sham residence in PA, wanted to privatize the Weather Service in favor of Accuweather, and was an earmark booster - among many other things such as that charter school stuff with his kids - like I said, he gave them the hammers to hit him with. He got too Belway-tized for his own good, and it cost him.
Toomey voted for the FDA approval of RU 486 while he was in the house. He claims he’s pro-life now but dosen’t deny that he was pro-choice in his House days. I pray that his change of heart about abortion is true. I’d hate to know that I voted for a pro-choicer.
That’s interesting because conservatism is the American center.
“Toomey may need move to center to win a 2nd term”
but he won’t.

He is the proto-tea party guy in that he was the one who took on and, finally, got rid of Arlen Specter.
There were some very good people elected on Tuesday, but Toomey may have been one of the best.
Thank you randita. Great facts.
Don't forget that two full years before the 2006 elections, the unions pumped millions into the state on 'issue ads' slamming Santorum. He was their number one targeted 'vulnerable' Republican that year.
They’re trying to predict the election 6 years from now? good luck with that!
