For me, the weirdest result of the night was the re-election as Governor of California of a man who first held the job when Harold Wilson was in Downing Street. Jerry Brown succeeded Ronald Reagan as governor (who himself succeeded Jerry’s father, Pat Brown, in the job) and went on to give Jimmy Carter a run for his money in the 1976 Democratic primaries. As a schoolboy, all I knew about him was that he was an ex-seminarian turned ultra-liberal Catholic, hung out with hippies and refused to live in the governor’s mansion. He was also very strongly opposed to the death penalty. In the 80s, after he left office, he was rumoured to have become some sort of Buddhist, and that was the last anyone on this side of the Atlantic heard of him for a very long time. To be honest, until a couple of years ago I had assumed he was either dead or living in an ashram for senior citizens. (He’s 72.)
Now I’ve checked out his Wikipedia profile and, boy, it’s a weird one. He had a penchant for the company of pop stars he once dated Linda Ronstadt and he remained a bachelor until 1990, when he married Anne Gust in a civil ceremony conducted by Senator Feinstein, of all people, with a Catholic service afterwards. Then there’s this intriguing detail:
In 1979 San Francisco punk band Dead Kennedys’ first single, “California Über Alles”, was released and sung from the perspective of then-governor Brown painting a picture of a hippie-fascist state, satirizing what they considered his mandating of liberal ideas in a fascist manner commenting on what lyricist Jello Biafra saw as the corrosive nature of power. The imaginary Brown had become President Brown presiding over secret police and gas chambers.

Yep.
California is the Short Bus State.
Brown was the guy who was the impetus behind the creation of the public employee unions, which is the major cause of CA’s current financial crisis. And yet he is again back in Sacramento.
My fellow CA voters are idiots.
I lived in CA during the Brown years.
I too was quite surprised that he managed re-election.
California , once well known US state, passed away on Nov 2, 2010 at the age of 160 years.
Do not send flowers. They will smoke them.
The old zombie/hippie drags himself up from the grave to haunt California to its death. Just finishing the job he started.
“Do not send flowers. They will smoke them.”
LOL!
I feel sorry for you and Victor Davis Hanson. Good luck.
I can’t decide who is more delusional, Brown or the voters that elected him. Someone on the Telegraph website commented on his impression that Brown is “madder than a box of frogs”. LOL!
Not to be too picky, but I think they are not idiots but insane since the accepted description of insanity is to keep repeating the same thing while expecting different results.
Of course they may not be expecting different results - then of course they would be idiots.
I guess next go around will be Gray Davis.
Talk about stuck on stupid.
It’s called “Battered State Syndrome”
LOL. I’ve been depressed since last night over CA but reading this really gave me a chuckle ;-)
I’m so disgusted with my state can’t even begin to explain what is going on here.
“went on to give Jimmy Carter a run for his money in the 1976...”
Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown never gave anyone a run for their money.
Zen fascists will control you
Hundred-percent natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face
When they get rid of Prop 13, I don’t want to hear one peep out of these libs who own property about their taxes.
I think it is pretty easy to understand. The state is about to go bankrupt. Under the leadership of “so-called” Republican Arnold the state has gone down the tubes. In the mind of the inane voters out there who forgot what a real Republican (Reagan) looks like, they were giving the Democrats a chance. Is it really anymore complicated than that?
