Two black Republican victories tonight mark the first time African-Americans will represent the GOP in Congress in seven years.
Retired Lt. Colonel Allen West's win in Florida's 22nd District and South Carolina State Rep. Tim Scott's victory in that state's 1st Congressional District is also the first time two black GOP members will serve in Congress since 1996.
Scott defeated Democrat Ben Frasier in an open contest to replace retiring Republican Rep. Henry Brown to the first black GOP in Congress since former Oklahoma Congressman J.C. Watts retired in 2003.
West defeated incumbent Democratic Rep. Ron Klein shortly after Scott's victory Tuesday. It was West's second contest against Klein, losing to the incumbent in 2008.

This is very good news.
Allen West is going to be a force to be reckoned with in congress. Just the beginning of great things to come for and from this great man
I’ve heard that Tim Scott is an outstanding public speaker. I’ve never heard him, but he may be the man we need to take on the Communist Black Caucus.
In the past the Congressional Black Caucus refused to allow black republicans do any more than have lunch with them. The republicans were denied the right to attend the CBC meetings.
I was about to have a vanity and congratulate Allen since he is a poster here. Congrats Allen. I would ping you but I can’t remember your handle.
I believe we would have elected a LOT more of them, if not for this miserable economy. There were too many races in play (for many of us, local ones) and too few free dollars we had to donate. For so many of our losing GOP candidates, it was simply a lack of enough funds to run against an incumbent.
I hope they follow Allen West’s example and commit themselves to running again in the very next election.
I wouldn’t mind if they told the CBC to pound sand and formed their own Frederick Douglass Caucus, with them deciding the membership rules!
Our guys LEAD. They don’t have to follow!
Will they be rejected by the Congressional Black Caucus?
I was hoping to have Charles Lollar from Maryland beat Steny Hoyer and join these two Republicans in the Congress, but the blacks in Prince George’s and Charles Counties rejected Charles.
They went for the paydday and voted for Steny Hoyer.
Charles was an excellent candidate he was sold down the river by his own people because he was Conservative.

"All in favor of voting West and Scott "not black" signify by raising your hand."
Me too, disappointed about that. Really glad for West and Scott.
I would not like to be the one telling Col. West why he can’t be in the CBC, if he wanted it.
Screw the CBC, Tim and Allen need to form an CAC (Congressional American Caucus) and only be concerned with being grouped as American.
Does anyone know how Star Parker did out in California? She would be the first Black Republican female ever elected. Hope she pulled it off.
Last I saw, Ms Parker was having her butt handed to her by the LA Democratic machine. Very sad. I’m also disappointed about the Steny Hoyer race in MD. I heard Loller speak once & thought he was fantastic
When will blacks wake up? Such a shame
On the one hand, I would love to see Scott and West reject the CBC as an outdated institution, that may have once worked to fight racism, actively promotes it today.
On the other hand, I’d enjoy seeing them apply and be rejected, so the CBC’s hypocrisy would be further exposed.
I need to read up on Scott, as I don’t know much about him, but I am thrilled that a great man like Lt. Colonel West will be serving in Congress. He is already one my top 2 favorite members of Congress.
