If someone were to gather 250 to 500 of the most absolutely committed Communists available worldwide; find a nice island with a mild climate and plenty of arable land for farming; ensure an adequate supply of usable tools, etc.; ensure that there was more than sufficient skills distributed among the group, etc.; and then turn them loose to build a Communist paradise — it would last exactly ONE generation.

As soon as the first group of kids reached adulthood, normal human aggressiveness, assertiveness, selfishness and greed would ensure the rise of dominant personalities who would gather power and wealth. It’s just the way humans are.

To elaborate-

The centralized form of running a nation where you have a concept of collectivism does not work because human nature is incompatible with it, economically it's not the most productive, it is incompatible with freedom and liberty, it is incompatible with the Christian religion, it ignores and generally attempts to even force the egalitarian thinking onto people and thereby ignores cultural and geographic differences.

Centralization does work in those places where you have eradicated Christianity or it never existed, where people have no desire for democracy, where you have a homogeneous society and in today's world it most be closed. Finally it works best in a society that is clannish/tribal and very backward (poor, agricultural etc). Vietnam, North Korea....etc have been under these forms of centralized governance for a long time and there is little issue. Even in those places where it has survived, you end up with mediocrity economically speaking because it's simply not the most productive way to do things. At best (long term) it delivers an economically retarded nation, albeit stable. At worst it uses force and/or internal strife (pitting groups against one another) to maintain itself as with Saddam, Iran, the former CCCP, China, Cuba etc and is still economically retarded.
