Stewart and Colbert rally draws thousands

Television comedians Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert drew tens of thousands of people to the National Mall on Saturday, promising to skewer partisan politics three days before contentious U.S. elections.

The Comedy Central hosts' "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" started off as part slapstick comedy show and part outdoor festival concert.

Stewart opened the festivities by declaring that "10 million" people showed up, representing all ethnic groups in America.

"It is a perfect demographic sampling of the American people," said Stewart, who hosted U.S. President Barack Obama on his show on Wednesday.

"As you know, if you have too many white people at your rally, then your cause is racist, but if you have too many people of color at your rally, then you must be asking for something: special rights -- like eating in restaurants or piggy back rides -- something that we as a society are not ready to give," he added.

The rally, widely viewed as a response to "August's "Restoring Honor" rally organized by conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, blurred the lines between satire and political activism.

I get 80-90,000 for this rally, vs. 550-650,000 for Restoring Honor. But there will likely be 10x-1000x time more garbage left behind.

It indicates to me that the folks who showed up at this have already resigned themselves to defeat.

Yep. But they got free sandwiches and a free bus ride, so everything's A-OK with them.

Punks, all.

Great comment at that blog:

150,000 people that are there to be entertained, and the majority of them won’t be motivated to vote on November 2nd. Those that will vote, will vote for a Democrat. And because of this rally, those individuals aren’t back in their voting districts helping out Democrats at the phone banks, or helping them canvassing door to door.

Thank You to the Comedy Central clowns for pulling away many people that would be assisting the Democrats three days before a crucial mid term election.”

We've joked about camping out at the polling place here. A couple of guys say they are really going to do it so they can vote first.

So funny the first two calls on C-SPIN on the “republican” line were seminar callers saying they were republicans who turned democrat?

That was so common....why I stopped watching...years ago. Does anybody but Dems watch it these days?

There are a couple of inaccuracies with the photos provided as compared to the circles overlayed on the map.

First, the photo of the Beck rally as displayed ends with the WWII monument, but the ellipses on the map ends at the Washington monument, which proportionately increases the comparison quite a bit. The throng may well have extended that far, but the photo stops there.

Second, the Stewart rally at its crux was much larger than the photo being shown in contrast. I was there during that crux, and personally witnessed a completely congested mall - shoulder to shoulder - from the smithsonian stop (around 12th street) all the way to the congress building. That’s roughly double the size outlined in the photo.

I haven’t really put much thought to comparisons between the two events, as I consider them to be apples and oranges, but this sort of exaggerating is not helpful in establishing a position to change people’s minds about their beliefs on the matter at hand. It just fuels the bunk rhetoric.
