A Minnesota congressman nearly untouchable for years may be in for the fight of his life.
A new KSTP/SurveyUSA poll shows 8th Congressional District Rep. Jim Oberstar leads Republican challenger Chip Cravaack by only one percentage point - 47 to 46.
Oberstar, who was first elected to the House in 1974, has not received less than 59 percent of the vote in 18 elections.
Steven Schier of Carleton College says Oberstar's votes on three key issues are hurting him: health care, cap and trade and federal stimulus funding.
In the KSTP/SurveyUSA poll, Cravaack gets 87 percent of Republicans, while Oberstar gets 84 percent of Democrats. Cravaack has a 24-point lead among Independents.
The last Republican to represent the 8th District was elected in the 1940s.

Cravaack gets 14 of the Republican votes in the "red" 8th district of Minnesota! ; )
I’ll be casting my vote for Chip in 82-1/2 hours!
As the saying goes, The Democrats will rue the day Obama was elected President. He is, single-handedly, destroying their party.
Take friends, family and like-minded neighbors with you. This one will be close.
The class of ‘74. I betcha that guy is a ultra-lib.
It’s amazing that Cravaack is doing so well in such a red district. It was this same Iron Range that gave Dayton the nomination.
You are correct, and I have briefed all family in the district. Neighbors seem to have a lot of Chip signs already!
“Good Luck!”
“Iron Ranged POed” ping.
Wow...that is hugh and series!
Thanks for the ping! Ya think that Oberstar’s star is dimming? Hope and pray that it goes out like the dim bulb he is! :)
The Iron Range needs a bright new face in congress...one that
will actually DO the will of the people! My thoughts are with
you guys! :)
Survey USA had Oberstar ahead by one point yesterday. My thought is that it’s up for grabs. This district has done Dem every election since 1948 and it’s time for a change.
If Cravaack wins this, WE are gonna celebrate! That would
be such a good thing for your part of the state....and the
dummies that keep voting D like robots don’t understand why they are
so miserable!
Fingers XX’d for this to happen, Sir!
Iron Range *ping*
bumping to check results Tuesday night. So many to keep track of. I forgot the name of the Az Repub woman in the close race with the established Dem.
Thanks....hope Chip pulls it out..I still don’t understand how Dayton is ahead..
