In an embarrassing campaign misstep, dozens of political commercials for GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Brady were yanked from the air Thursday because at least three Chicago television stations did not receive payment.
Brady characterized the development five days before next Tuesday's election as a "glitch" that appeared to have gotten worked out late Thursday, allowing his ads to resume airing today.
But the mistake cost Brady valuable air time and left the candidate, who has run on cleaning up Springfield's budgetary mess, explaining a financial gaffe of his own.
"I understand there was a glitch with our media buyer," Brady said. "We've paid our media buyer. He's taking care of it."
Brady denied having financial problems. As of two days ago the campaign had spent $17 million.
"We have enough money to carry out this campaign," he said.
Brady spokeswoman Patty Schuh said it is not even clear that the stations really had gone dark -- even though WGN-Channel 9, WLS-Channel 7 and WMAQ-Channel 5 all reported their stations had pulled Brady's ads. WLS reported that it stopped airing Brady ads at 2 p.m. Thursday. The station indicated it received confirmation of payment Thursday, and the ads would resume today.
Schuh blamed the glitch on an internal change. She said the Republican Governor's Association agreed to pay a larger share of a $3.3 million ad buy the group and the campaign were splitting.
Quinn made hay of the slip-up: "Well, you know, you've got to pay for ads. You can't just run ads and expect commercials to be aired without payment."
And thank you for that astute analysis, Professor Quinn.
At least he owned up to it.
Paid the bill and is RESPONSIBLE.
What Brady SHOULD do, is state it was an error and capitalize on how QUICKLY he showed PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, PAID the BILL and owned up to the mistake. I’d also add that we’d be in better shape if the Demoncrats wouldn’t SPEND MONEY THEY DON”T HAVE. Stress that he has the money and paid his debt.
I guess 17 million isn’t enough for the chitown media.
sounds more like an attempt to embarrass the candidate. Cic anyone tell the candidate that his media buyer wasn’t paying the bill?
“You can’t just run ads and expect commercials to be aired without payment.”
Unless you are running as a DEMOCRAT.
Even after they were paid, they wouldn’t air the aids. When Democrats did it, no mention of it though.
The 2nd job I took as a brand new freelance video dude some 17 years ago was for a local politician running for the Republican nomination for governor. He never paid me, claiming he’d never authorized the work.
When I called on the phone to ask for payment, he tried to pre-empt a lawsuit by threatening to ruin me in court if I sued.
First time I ever saw he was when he was in a local church, campaigning for votes. Sheesh.
Must think he is a Democrat if he thinks his ads are going to run for free.
Well, hopefully this doesn’t hurt Bill. The race seems to be won, thank goodness, in spite of some of his missteps and what I thought were pretty awful debate experiences by Brady.
It will still be “Governor Brady” come January. :-)
