Respectability: Many Americans believe the leadership presently ensconced in Washington belongs on a comedy show. Few, however, want the presidency brought down to that level.
Why, exactly, does the president of the United States feel compelled to appear on TV entertainment programs? He's been on Jay Leno, David Letterman and, least reputable of all, ABC's daytime hen party "The View," infamous for its trash-talking co-hostesses.
This week President Obama outdid himself with a backfiring visit to comedian Jon Stewart's "Daily Show." Of all people, liberal Washington Post political reporter Dana Milbank appraised it as a huge miscalculation for the White House to send the president on a show that epitomizes Gen X cynicism.
"On Comedy Central, the joke was on President Obama Wednesday night," Milbank declared. Coming "on the eve of what will almost certainly be the loss of his governing majority" to pay homage to the "gatekeeper of the disillusioned left," Obama found himself being called "dude" by Stewart.
"The indignity of a comedy show host calling the commander in chief 'dude' pretty well captured the moment for Obama," according to Milbank, noting that the indignity came in spite of the fact that "Obama had a friendly host and an even friendlier crowd."
Truth be told, Stewart to his credit never had any intention of lobbing softballs the president's way. After Obama's "I don't want to lump you in with a bunch of other pundits," Stewart came back with "I don't mean to lump you in with other presidents."

A classic movie.
Colbert humiliated Congress and Stewart humiliated the President. The really funny thing is, they’re all Democrats.
Democrats attempt to humiliate America every day
If it were a republican president the hypocritical press would be howling about how many problems we have and how is it possible that the potus could have time to wast on a comedy show.
0 is setting a record for layzness and shiftless in a potus ever
May as well go on all the “funny” shows his “presidency” would be a huge joke if it wasn’t so hideous.
Best line: “President Obama may end up realizing something the hard way: that even Americans friendly to his political philosophy eventually recognize bunk when they gaze at it long enough.”
They are doing a damn good job of it, too.
BUMP
I gave up on expecting decorum from the Democrats when Al Franken was seated in the United States Senate.
LOL!
Decorum went out the window at the Wellstone Memorial.
For some ungodly reason Obama thinks he is special.
No. Long before that when Ted Kennedy ranted on about Bork and “back alley abortions”, etc.
“I gave up on expecting decorum from the Democrats when Al Franken was seated in the United States Senate.”
Same here; this was supposed to be an “exclusive club”, then the star of “Trading Places” (one of the guys guarding the gorilla on the train) wins a Senate seat. After Hillary’s win in NY, and how she got it, I have no expectations of the democratic process.
I’ll admit it. I’m slow on the uptake. This morning I wanted to hang Jon Stewart (nee Liebowitz) for yukking it up with Obozo. Now, upon further review and hearing other, better-informed opinions, I wanna give him a goddam medal.
This may well have been the first unscripted interview the Messiah has ever sat down for and it shows. He really, really, screwed the pooch. Stephen Hayes of the Weekly Standard was right when he said the audience was laughing AT Obama not WITH Obama. I dunno if Stewarts’”dude” comment was a more egregious act of lese majeste than the “boxers or briefs” question of eighteen years ago but it came in second to the way Obama set himself up with some of his gaffes. He was reduced to begging our forbearance and asking us to give him just a little more time.
Jon gave him enough rope to hang himself and then pulled the noose tight.
