Poll shows Dem's lead widening in Del. Senate race (O'Donnell losing ground)

WILMINGTON, Del. -- Despite a spate of television ads aimed at reintroducing her to voters, Republican Senate hopeful Christine O'Donnell of Delaware has failed to chip away at Democratic nominee Chris Coons' strong lead, according to a new poll. She even may be going backward.

The survey released Thursday from Fairleigh Dickinson University-PublicMind shows Coons holding a commanding 21-point lead, with 57 percent of likely voters saying they will vote for him compared to just 36 percent for O'Donnell. O'Donnell trailed by 17 points in a similar Fairleigh Dickinson poll released earlier this month.

Cassino said O'Donnell, a tea party favorite who spent years as a conservative evangelical commentator on cable television, would probably win in other states that have more social conservatives and a larger tea party presence.

"But there just aren't enough in Delaware," he said.

The race has been particularly frustrating for Republicans because it was heavily favored as a GOP victory until O'Donnell upset congressman and former Gov. Mike Castle in the party primary.

I’ve not been able to find the internals but like the previous one I doubt the sample is good. I’d like to see another Rasmussen poll. I don’t see Christine losing ground, it doesn’t make sense unless something is happenning on the ground that I can’t see from here. Governor Pete DuPont’s endorsement as well as the new selection of Taxman ads should be boosting her.

I think the media is hyping this one race above all others because it is one of the rare places where they think they have good news.

I can see the headlines next Wednesday,

“O’DONNELL LOSES, Republicans gain 80/11 other places”

I wonder if they’ll mention Blanche Lincoln, a sitting two-term senator, losing by a larger percentage in a less unfavorable state for her party. Nah, O’Donnell will be the most significant result in the history of politics if she loses.

No surprise. The inevitable outcome of kneecapping Castle... not that he was any walk in the park.

I don't tell the truth when I am polled by political prognosticators.

I think she can win but they’d better have one hell of a ground game. Christine still faces some of what Palidino faces in NY a bunch of phony Republicans who are as bad as the Democrats.

They have some nasty ads out with her looking goofy and all the crazy soundbites. Then it shows Coons at a desk in shirt and tie looking all professional. Damaging I think.

I’m still smiling about ousting Castle.
Wasn’t Scott Brown down in the polls too and got elected anyway?

I wish she wins as it would truly cause fear within the RINO herd, but her lost will cause them to take heart dispite the election A$$ kicking they get as a whole and make them believe ‘You Need Us’.
