A Torah scroll and several other ritual items were stolen this week from an Arizona synagogue. Congregants arrived Monday morning to discover the door broken open and a gaping spot within the ark where the holy scroll had stood in the Young Israel Synagogue of Phoenix.
The synagogue members were preparing for a circumcision ceremony for a new baby boy when they became aware of the tragedy. The womens entrance to the synagogue was smashed as well.
The theft at 7th Street and Maryland was described as emotionally devastating, by spiritual leader Rabbi Reuven Mann, who told local reporters, The Torah became a part of our lives and our soul. He added that a number of his synagogues members began to cry.
The stolen Torah was valued at approximately $35,000, but is much more precious than that, Mann explained. They are treated with tremendous reverence, passed on from generation to generation. A special scribe can take as long as an entire year to produce a Torah scroll, which is comprised of the five books of Moses.

Let me guess. Amish?
Could have been white supremecists or Aryan Nations
wannabees. They would be top of my list of suspects.
Holder is probably getting his advice on this case from Joy Bahar and investigating the Nazis and the KKK.
My guess is it has 5 letters. Starts with an I ans ends with a SLAM!
“Could have been white supremecists or Aryan Nations

Why would the Torah have been stolen instead of desecrated then? Are there collectors who would buy such things on the black market?
“My guess is it has 5 letters. Starts with an I ans ends with a SLAM!”
They would plant bombs for when the place was occupied.
This is an odd crime.
RIGHT.....WHO would want the Torah....why not just desecrate it there???? Makes no sense.
Just suppose that this had been an indoctrination center for America’s #1 victim group (the one that flew planes into buildings Sept 11, 2001). The president would be on TV condemning the action. The FBI would be sniffing around for fingerprints. All the TV talk shows would be talking about how “racist” Americans are.
But it’s not. Let’s see if the president goes on TV later today...
No matter which group or individual perpetrated this horrid crime, it is chilling and an escalation of scope, insult, and infliction of pain on Jewish society in America. There has not been much national coverage, so you have to search local coverage to note the quickly rising incidence of anti-Semitic acts across the United States. We are lagging behind the rate of occurrence in Europe but are matching Europe in percent increase in crimes against Jewish institutions and people. It is both sad and frightening.
The theft of this Torah, instead of it’s desecration, makes me wonder what was so special about this Torah in particular. Does anyone know if there’s a special history behind it?
Not a good idea, stealing the word of God. Coveting it is ok. But stealing, not a good idea.
Hiding ok. Stealing, not so much.
Torah’s are expensive. Even the new ones are upwards $70-80k.
Wow, that much? What makes them so expensive? Is it the labor and lack of qualified scribes or something else?
They are created by hand on parchment with quill - by learned Teachers who require a full time salary and also do other “work” in the synagogue.
Obama voters. Count on it.
hi, all torahs are seen by Jewish believers as God’s Presence, which is why they accord it a burial when damaged.
The torah is practically human, even transcendently.
So what is the cost of one human life?
The local Chabad (who are usually armed) needs to find the perps and kill them. No mercy for such crimes, and no trial. Animals are not worthy of rights.
