SAN FRANCISCO: Gold's Gym franchise exiting over funds to Rove
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/27/10 | Andrew Ross

Posted on 10/27/2010 8:15:55 AM PDT by SmithL

Pumping money, for sure, but one doesn't normally associate Karl Rove with pumping iron.

That was before the owner of Gold's Gym International Inc. kicked in $2 million to a Rove operation very much involved in Tuesday's election.

That the operation is financing candidates avowedly opposed to all manner of gay rights issues - adoption, marriage, job discrimination, serving in the military - has proved too much for the chain's Bay Area franchise.

"Our member base made us aware of this, and we decided on a course of action," Don Dickerson, the franchise's director of operations, said in an interview. After 22 years, he said, it's walking away from a storied brand whose name is affixed to gyms in more than 40 states and 3o countries, and has a claimed 3 million members worldwide.

In a Facebook posting Monday, Dickerson said the four Bay Area locations - two in San Francisco, one in Oakland and the other in Marin, with a total membership of approximately 22,000 - would no longer be associated with the Gold's Gym name when its contract comes up for renewal in September 2012. "Or prior to that date - our legal counsel is reviewing our options.

"A large percentage of our employees and members are from the LGBT community," Dickerson added in the statement. "Gold's Gym San Francisco has long been a pillar of the gay community. It is very unfortunate that the CEO of TRT Holdings has chosen this course of action."

That would be Texas billionaire Robert Rowling, whose TRT Holdings Inc. owns Gold's Gym, plus the Omni Hotel chain - one of whose properties is in San Francisco - as well as real estate and other interests.

Robert Rowling certainly ought to close all his business interests in San Francisco. Those people don’t need jobs, and he won’t be losing his property when the earthquake wipes out that ungodly place.

Actually, in this case, I don’t blame the queers. I’d stop doing business with a gym that supported Obama. As long as government is not involved, it’s capitalism, pure and simple.

They probably pay franchise fees to Golds for the name, and in this economic environment, need to cut back costs.

The homo thing could be a convenient cover story.

SF gyms are nothing more than sperm exchange points. Just bath houses with weights.

Actually, we’ve been going to switch gyms. This moves Gold’s to the top of my list.

I’ll be touring their facilities this weekend.
