ST. CLOUD, Minn. Two of the nation's best-funded congressional candidates met Tuesday in a high-stakes debate, with DFL challenger Tarryl Clark and 6th District Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann each working to defy efforts to define them as party acolytes.
Before a sometimes boisterous crowd at the St. Cloud Civic Center, Clark tried to distance herself from Democratic leaders and "exploding deficits" in Washington, D.C., while Bachmann slammed former President George W. Bush for allowing "way too much debt."
Both agree that jobs are the No. 1 issue in the race, but that's about where the similarities ended.
Bachmann, who has positioned herself as a hawk on government spending, said, "I agreed with candidate Obama when he said he wanted to reduce the deficit, because George Bush frankly spent way too much money."
In a nod to Bachmann's repeated attempts to link Clark with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Clark reminded Bachmann that she was running against Minnesota candidates.
