Election 2010: New Mexico Governor: Martinez (R) Holds Double-Digit Lead Over Denish (D)
Rasmussen Reports ^ | October 26, 2010 | Rasmussen Reports

Republican prosecutor Susana Martinez again moves to a 10-point lead over Democratic Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish in the race to be New Mexico’s next governor.

The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters shows Martinez picking up 52% of the vote in the second straight survey this month, while Denish draws support from 42%. Two percent (2%) like some other candidate, and four percent (4%) are undecided.

These numbers move the race from Leans Republican to Solid Republican in the Rasmussen Reports Election 2010 Gubernatorial Scorecard.

The survey of 750 Likely Voters in New Mexico was conducted on October 24, 2010 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Voters trust Martinez over Denish by double-digit margins in four key electoral areas - the economy and jobs, immigration, taxes and government spending.

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of the state’s voters share a favorable opinion of Martinez ... Thirty-six percent (36%) view the Republican nominee unfavorably...

For Denish, favorables are 46% and unfavorables are 50%.

Who wouldn’t want a party change after having endured Bill Richardson.

Why are the dems doing so well in the NM congressional races?

They aren't; NM-1 a toss up, NM-2 now R and NM-3 D but R is closing:

NM-1: Internal poll shows Barela leading Heinrich by 2 (10/26/10 4:30 PM )

NM-2: Pearce internal poll pegs lead at nine (10/21/10)

NM-3: Lujan leads Mullins 49-43, Daily Kos/PPP poll says (old - 9/27/10)

With Martinez up 10+ the three congressional races shouldn’t be toss ups.

Had a robocall from the Martinez campaign on my home phone last night announcing a campaign stop here mid-morning with MS Governor Haley Barbour and LA Governor Bobby Jindal. The place was Rep. Hdqtrs which used to be the location of the women’s club. It was packed with as many as 400-500 people with all seats taken and standing room shoulder to shoulder in the back.

Barbour and Jindal were great with Jindal talking about LA economic recovery in spite of Katrina and the BP spill. The key is getting rid of corrupt politicians (businesses don’t want to have to kowtow with pay-to-play requests) and having a stable regulatory environment and a business-favorable tax policy.

Susana went into how she’d change Santa Fe and put a moratorium on Richardson’s cap and tax program expected to be approved on election day by the enviro-controlled state air board. And she would not make up the deficit by increasing taxes on business or individuals. A great speech - very comfortable and forceful in her presentation. The audience was on its feet a couple of times.

She’s Hispanic and NM is over 50% Hispanic and Native-American populated. NM-1 is always a toss-up; Heather Wilson always won with a margin of just several hundred votes and usually after fighting to keep the Dems from including so-called provisional ballots.

Northern NM is mostly Hispanic and N/A with lots of pueblos and the sprawling Navajo Reservation. To have Mullins down by only 6 is a real accomplishment. It is hoped that Susana will have skirttails!

Remarkable news considering how NM was almost written off. Two years ago there was a total Demo sweep. Maybe some voters there are coming to their senses. Will be quite a statement also that the only Hispanic woman governor in the country will be a Republican!

BTW, Susana is Dona Ana County district attorney and responsible for prosecuting drug runners (usually illegals) caught committing crimes against people and property in the county. Her jurisdiction abuts Juarez, Mexico where 14 were killed last weekend at a teenage birthday party by one of the drug cartels and two more killed today. She’s fearless — was an armed security guard at 17 years old and carries. Her husband is county under-sheriff.

NM went from three out of five congress critters down to zero.

The conservative women are putting the men to shame this cycle.

Hopefully Dianna Duran will be carried over in the Sec of State race. We haven’t won it since Jesusita Perrault in 1928.

Very good news - and as you said, good for the other races - there are a couple of congressional races where Democrats are being targeted there if I’m remembering correctly that we have a good chance of picking up, and this strong showing at the top of the ticket only helps in that effort.
