A new Public Policy Polling poll shows Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin ahead of Republican senate candidate John Raese, 50 percent to 44 percent.
Manchins ratings for his job performance as governor continues to be high, with 69 percent approving. President Obama continues to have very low ratings, with only 31 percent approving of him.
The reason this race has remained close despite Manchins overwhelming popularity is that for the folks who both like Manchin and dislike Obama, accounting for 37 percent of voters in the state, the feelings toward Obama have been more influential in how they plan to vote. In early October Manchin trailed 59-34 with that group. Now though, as hes emphasized his conservative credentials on the campaign trail, Manchin is facing only a 51-43 deficit with that segment of the electorate, said PPPs Tom Jensen in a statement.
Jensen also pointed out that Raeses unfavorability ratings have risen from 35 percent to 47 percent. He is viewed favorably by 42 percent.
And while Raese may be falling behind, 52 percent of voters hope that Republicans will control the next congress. Fifty-five percent think that the national Democratic party is too liberal, while 19 percent think the same of the GOP. Thirty-two percent of voters think the Democratic party is neither too liberal nor too conservative, a sentiment shared by 42 percent about the Republican party.
And while 39 percent would prefer Manchin as senator, 48 percent like him better as governor.
In recent weeks, Manchin has aggressively positioned himself to the right, coming out in favor of a partial repeal of President Obamas health-care bill, after supporting passing it this March, talking about how he would never support cap-and-trade, and most recently, in interviews with Politics Daily, refusing to definitively endorse Sen. Harry Reid for senate majority leader or President Obama for 2012.
Too bad for Manchin that Tom Jensen and PPP are the only ones buying it...
As Rush was saying today, we can expect a full week of these types of polls.
“As Rush was saying today, we can expect a full week of these types of polls.”
Yep.
I checked the internals and compared them to 2008 and PPP gave the Democrats a +7% advantage over 2008. That is the only reason Manchin is leading. PPP had been getting better as a pollster till they signed up to poll for Daily Kos. The last few polls have been crap.
I believe Rasmussen had Raese up by 5, almost the exact opposite of PPP. I beginning to wonder is Rasmussen has become more of a follower this cycle or not. IF he has, this is troubling - I really thought we had this one in the bag.
PPP and anything conducted by a College/University is suspect.
Ok - that is good information. I suspected that they (PPP) may be playing with the tunrout numbers to get a better sample. They seem to be doing that pretty much across the board.
I suppose we’ll find out in about 8 days who’s right - There’s a lot on the line for both Rasmussen and PPP.

Why do you automatically assume that it’s the Rasmussen polling that is wrong, and not the other way around?
See maelstorm’s comment 4 for a more likely reason.
If the Democrats are up +7 in WV when we are running +4.2 in early vote over 2008 then we have a huge disappointment coming.
I think Daily Kos needed a pollster that would fudge to replace the last one they had that got caught with phony data...
These polls should be outlawed. Newsrooms throughout the country (including FOX) will lead with these polling results.
Hello
PPP is a actual Dem party run ( push ) polling front group.
Its pure propaganda meant to be spread withiout question by the likes of the morons at NRO and Hotair !
Its a news cycle PR releases.

Amazingly dishonest.
No one should believe the BS coming from liberals. They are trying to do now what worked for them in 2008, convince people not to bother voting..just go vote..Rasmussen is a very reliable poll and has Manchin down by 5..PPP is the same poll that had Doug Hoffman up by 20 points..they get their poll numbers out of their asses, don’t buy any of it
Daily Kos poll. Enough said.
The newsrooms, particularly FOX should lead with it and then make fun of the internals. Why treat us like unsophisticated boobs?
Fact is Manchin supported Obama’s healthcare and that will destroy America. If this doent show the folks in WV what he is then they deserve to go under. The only problem is they are sinking the whole country.
PPP is sometimes a leader they had Christine in the lead going into the Primary in DE and sometimes its ‘out there’. Recently it has appeared ‘out there’ especially over the past few weeks. I could tell the Illinois polls showing Brady’s lead disappearing were bunk. West Virginia is one race that is the canary in the coal mine. If it goes Manchin then we are in for a disappointing night. People in WV hate Obama, hate Obamacare, and hate Cap and Trade and I’m not kidding. If they elect a Democrat Senator in this environment then something is very wrong.
Given that Democrats hold an almost 2 to 1 edge in voter registration in WV, and given the GOP has almost no effective local organization to carry out GOTV campaigns, I think Freepers, including myself, have been a bit over optimistic on this one. Obama is detested in WV, but an almost 90 year tradition of voting D in state and local races is hard to overcome. It is not over, but it is going to hard for Raese to pull it out, especially since the out of state funded attack ads against Manchin seem to have backfired. WV voters do not like what is perceived to be outside carpet baggers.
