WHAS11 News is following a developing story out of Hardin County. Firefighters spent several hours on Saturday trying to contain a wildfire.
While its still too early to tell, West Point fire chief Jeff Wright thinks the fire in the Fort Duffield Civil War Park may have been sparked by a jump-over from the fire thats been burning in the Fort Knox reservation.
The WHAS11 crew walked up a hill inside the park to get a closer look at the now-controlled flames and saw firsthand the damage the fire caused. The blaze was so hot, it did something no one working the fire said they had ever seen before; melted a portion of one mans helmet.
If the wind doesnt get back up and we maybe get some rain, maybe tomorrow afternoon, we may be in good shape. It will be a short night for a lot of us, because well be back up in the morning monitoring things, said Chief Wright.

Efforts to put out Fort Knox fires continues
I took some friend hiking Saturday near the Madison-Jackson county line, and the air was full of smoke from some forest fire, blowing in from the southeast. It’s been damned dry here.
Hopefully it stays away from Knob Creek. The range is just north of the battlefield.
Nice tagline
I hope they get some weather to help the situation it sounds like a big fire.
Man, gold really is hot!
Between you and I, arson jihad (it’s been going on for over thirty years here, and centuries around the world).
OMG I never ever thought about that
Exactly.
Arson jihad.........
Like the fire that cut off the Grand Canyon route this summer during the tourist season.
These things are arson. And not all jihadis are from the ME.
I’m not sure the arson jihadis can find Ft Knox, and if they can, I’m not sure they would want to try to start their fires out there on the ranges where all manner of white hot tracer bullets from 5.56mm to 120mm are raining down on them :-)
True story..
Mike
Indeed.
Some of those fire fighters need to come work the forest fires in California.....Melting helmets is nothing.
Destroying entire fire trucks & all the equipment on board happens.
