Jerry Brown, buoyed by polls, makes populist pitch

LOS ANGELES – His lead widening over Meg Whitman in the governor's race, Jerry Brown campaigned Sunday at traditionally black churches in south Los Angeles, urging a reliably Democratic constituency to vote on Election Day.

Brown, the Democratic nominee, cast himself as a populist, criticizing Whitman for her infrequent voting record and characterizing her policy proposals as elitist.

"I'm not going to tell you, but you've probably heard that the person I'm running against didn't vote most of the time," Brown said at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Compton. He said California is a wealthy state and that "we've got to spread it out to everybody," not "suck it all up to the top."

Brown has made Whitman's proposal to eliminate the capital gains tax a point of emphasis, saying it would benefit the rich and cost billions of dollars.

Whitman, the Republican nominee, has said the tax cut would improve the business climate, eventually increasing overall tax revenue.

A University of Southern California/Los Angeles Times poll released Sunday showed Brown leading Whitman 52 percent to 39 percent among likely voters, according to the Los Angeles Times. (Results for likely voters have a margin of sampling error of 3.2 points in either direction, the Times said.) A Public Policy Institute of California poll last week showed Brown with an eight-point lead.

That supposed “Wall of Separation” between Church and State only applies to people who aren’t Democrats.

If Californians elect ole Moonbeam, they deserve to go broke, and they will.

Um...it USED to be a wealthy state. Then there was this governor back in, oh, the late '70s and early '80s who f**ked it all up. You probably know him.

I find it inexplicable that former Governor Moonbeam is leading in the race down there. Oregon is trying recycled Gubnors as well, with former Governor “Dr. No” John Kitzhaber leading the race.

Why do they call him Moonbeam anyway? As a non-Californian who was born during his first term, I really have no idea where this term came from.

I don’t care if idiot Kalifornians elect Brown, they’ll get what they deserve, just don’t send that clown Boxer back to the Senate to torture the rest of us.

Somehow I can’t see Brown winning and Boxer losing. Just doesn’t make sense. It looks to me that we will be stuck with these two dummies..and other liberal ballot choices in CA..the state is then finished financially.

Moonbeam is clearly delusional, and assumes that a majority of California voters share his delusions. Judging from what I have observed of California, he may be right.

Weren’t a bunch of white churches threatened with loss of their tax exempt status for handing out “voters guides” for their parishioners? No double standard here....

Sending Politicians back to clean up the mess they made is not the same as sending your kids back the their rooms to clean up the mess that they made.

What is it with these A$$ Clowns?

California is lost. it’s so full of 1st generation mexicans and illegals and welfare basket cases that the only way to win is to promise wealth redistribution. the giant sucking sound we hear will be what’s left of business in Ca leaving the state. I don’t want to see any bailouts when they go broke. The deserve what they get.

Columnist Mike Royko gave him the nickname back in the 1970’s when he was governor. He was just as whacky then as he is now. He was dating Linda Ronstadt, sleeping on the floor, and eating sprouts, iow, he was a Californian.

California is completely hopeless. It really is, totally and utterly hopeless. If your a normal, productive person living in California....GET OUT NOW. Things are about to get a LOT worse.

California is about to have Jerry Brown as Governor along with an overwhelmingly Democratic statehouse. Republicans will likely win enough seats in the US Congress to block all further state/union bailouts. Californians will be removing the 2/3rds requirement to pass a budget. This is a recipe for massive tax increases.

Again, if your a normal productive person living in California, you’d better get out fast - your taxes are about to go WAY up.

I agree 100%. California is a lost cause and no matter who is governor the slide into a third world state will continue. In fact, by being the loser Meg Whitman will actually be the winner.

I’m really of two minds on this race.

With the Dhimms basically running California, when the state’s economy finally comes crashing down, that’s not if - merely when, the Dhimms can take the heat for it.

I think Whitman would have the same issues that Schwartzenobama had with the California House and Senate. The Dhimms are pretty well entrenched, so they will pass every screwball bill they want. Arnold is going to take the hit for the state’s coming implosion; ala Bush. You know that Gov. Moonbeam will just add to the problem.

If the Repubs can get and keep the House, then there will be little chance of the Fed’s bailing them out - that is as long as we keep holding their feet to the fire.
