Portland, Maine, weighs letting noncitizens vote
Boston Herald ^ | 10/23/10 | Associated Press

Like his neighbors, Claude Rwaganje pays taxes on his income and taxes on his cars. His children have gone to Portland’s public schools. He’s interested in the workings of Maine’s largest city, which he has called home for 13 years.

There’s one vital difference, though: Rwaganje isn’t a U.S. citizen and isn’t allowed to vote on those taxes or on school issues. That may soon change.

Portland residents will vote Nov. 2 on a proposal to give legal residents who are not U.S. citizens the right to vote in local elections, joining places like San Francisco and Chicago that have already loosened the rules or are considering it.

The operative words here are “Legal Resident.”

These are people who have “Green Cards.”

They have almost every right that USA citizens have except voting and security classified jobs and things like that.

There are close to 12 million of them living in the USA.

Typically, they are relatives of new USA citizens.

They get here via “Chain Migration.”

They are eligible for every kind of welfare benefit, including SSI and Medicaid for elderly parents and grandparents.

Except in extreme cases, they cannot be evicted from the USA.

About 1 million new “Green Card Legal Residents” enter the USA each year.

The “conversion” rate for “Green Card Legal Residents” to full USA citizenship is relatively low, so the total number of “Legal Residents” increases EVERY year.

“Comprehensive Immigration Reform” includes the mass conversion of Legal Residents to Full Citizenship.

New USA citizens vote against the Republican Party 75%-25%.

You do the math, then wave goodbye to American Conservatism.

Death by Democracy.

Clearly you have a problem distinguishing between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigrants. I’ve seen no one here advocating for ILLEGAL immigrants.

Arm chair is plenty comfy, here...

Why would a "family member" choose NOT to take on the family identity? LOL

As far as Legal immigrants not wanting to join the family, then they don't deserve to vote, don't deserve any public assistance OR convieiences, and do not (in the instant case), get to call themselves Americans; because they are NOT Americans.

Deadbeats abound; we don't need additional ones who aren't even Citizens.

the old man doesn’t vote, and doesn’t take any public assistance (other than the Social Security he paid into for 50 years). So... whats a “public convenience”? Should he not be able to ride the bus or drive on the interstate? Or do you just spout off without thinking?

Which election was that?

It was the MO house 40th district (no republican running) dem primary between machine candidate John Rizzo and conservative, veteran Will Royster.

Jack Cashill did a terrific article on this here.

RE: “even though he is NOT a citizen, is probably a better “citizen” that most people born here.”

I’m sure that is true, and we wouldn’t have issues like this if it wasn’t.

And what fix is that oh wise one? My father has lived here for 53 years and is not a citizen. What do you think we should do with him?

Is he here illegally???

It's moves like this that encourage me to ship out all non citizens...

Sounds more like expired visa problems than a voting issue. When will we ever learn.

Nope. Clinton gave at least 90,000 of these Somali creatures full asylum as a reward for murdering our Black Hawk soldiers. I don't think those visas ever expire.

“partaking of the benefit of residing in, working in, blah blah blah”... (sic)

How dare you! The blood of my late family members who served in the military is not "blah blah blah." Show some respect for your betters.

The "fix" is BECOME A CITIZEN, and it's astounding to me that you are unable to figure that out on your own.

He came here 53 years ago (legally), got drafted into the Army, served, married an American (my mother), and raised a family. Encouraged his two sons to become military officers (which they did). Worked hard, paid his taxes, and realized the American dream. He just never took the final step of citizenship. His choice. He doesn’t vote. He’s not allowed to vote. He SHOULDN’T be allowed to vote. And he doesn’t have a problem with it.

Yet some on this board would have him shipped back.

Word to the wise... not every immigrant slipped over the border in the middle of the night. Be careful you don’t tar them all with the same brush.

How dare me? How dare YOU. Got the same spilled blood in my family. My father, that LEGAL immigrant you so despise, also served in the U.S. Military. As did his two sons. And with all respect to you OldLady, i’m quite positive you are anything but “my better”.

He’s not a citizen. HIS CHOICE. The only reason it bugs me is that he’s slightly to the right of Attila the Hun, and we could use his vote.

I posted before I read on (which I shouldn’t do). I don’t think I was aware you could be drafted if you were not a citizen. But anyway, he is married to a citizen, and seems to have a perfectly legit right to be here.
Unfortunately, things as they stand today, because our politicians use the issue for their own ends, keep people stirred up, and I think they post thinking only of illegal aliens, and the really bad permutations coming from the whole mess. I doubt anyone here wishes any ill toward your father, but I could be wrong. One thing that really angers me is that I honestly believe that some of these politicians know they are stirring up hate against immigrants in general and people of certain ethnicities in general by blurring the lines IN ORDER TO FURTHER THEIR OWN AGENDAS. They don’t care. They live above the fray.

Thank you. And yes, you can still serve in the Military if you aren’t a citizen. And in the old days, as soon as you got here, they drafted you!!

I knew you could serve (learned that recently!) but didn’t know you could be drafted (because it’s been so long since we had a draft, I guess I hadn’t really thought about it).

Well, it seems that English is not your first language, and you’re having trouble understanding expressed concepts. Once again, you are unable to grasp the meaning of a post. Since you were unable to get the first post to which you responded, I was foolish to try to elucidate further.

Just so you know, offering respect and then an insult in the same sentence does not make sense, not that your opinion is worth the bandwidth, nor do I have the slightest respect for it, Mr. Blah blah blah.
