In the wake of NPR's firing of contributor Juan Williams over comments about Muslims, Mike Huckabee is calling on the next Congress to cut the radio network's funding when it convenes next year.
"NPR has discredited itself as a forum for free speech and a protection of the First Amendment rights of all and has solidified itself as the purveyor of politically correct pabulum and protector of views that lean left," Huckabee said in a statement provided to CNN.
Williams told Fox News host Bill O'Reilly on Monday that he gets "worried" and "nervous" on flights when he sees people wearing "Muslim garb." NPR terminated Williams' contract on Wednesday evening.
Huckabee said he "will no longer accept interview requests from NPR as long as they are going to practice a form of censorship, and since NPR is funded with public funds, it is a form of censorship."
"It is time for the taxpayers to start making cuts to federal spending, and I encourage the new Congress to start with NPR," he said.
NPR says federal funding comprises less than 2 percent of its budget, with most of its financial support coming from station fees, sponsorships and grants. Like Williams, the former Arkansas governor is also a contributor to the Fox News channel.
Huckabee called Williams "refreshingly honest and candid," adding: "There isn't a more honest and fair-minded person in journalism."

He now has my Vote...
Gee, Huckabee trying to get in front of the parade.
Liberals = islam....islam = liberals
I agree with Huck, but it sounds like he’s running against which means I still won’t vote for him.Nice guy, I just don’t want his sort to be President. He’s too RINOISH...
Hey, finally something I can agree with Nanny Huckabee on, although its too bad that he wants funding cut because of this incident—he should want funding cut because government shouldn’t be in the business of running a radio and TV network.
Me either! Don't even bother calling me, NPR!
“NPR has discredited itself as a forum for free speech and a protection of the First Amendment rights of all ...”
Like I said in another post, this is an unbelievable disappointment.
g.t.o.
“Gee, Huckabee trying to get in front of the parade.”
You aren’t kidding. Mr. Huckabee, why don’t you represent something more important, like ending the illegal immigrant invasion?
Oh, that’s right. You like the illegals and they’re your “best friends”. If anyone votes for this knucklehead, I feel sorry for you.
I don't listen to NPR so I'm curious as to how often he actually gets interview requests from NPR.
“Huckabee Calls on Congress to Cut Funding for NPR”
O’Reilly said the same thing.
Gingrich wants a congressional investigation.
“NPR has discredited itself as a forum for free speech...” or another way to say it, NPR has REVEALED itself as a forum for the left.
Just like the rest of the libs this past 2 years. Hey, maybe people will catch on, after all.
My sincere admiration for Huckabee.
Gosh, I actually agree with the Huckster on something. Go figure.
I didn’t realize Congress was funding it. I though Soros was funding the whole thing. But then again, what doesn’t Congress fund. Besides private jobs.
Eff you, media whore Huckster. You only call out NPR when one of your libtalker buddies gets the axe.
Why cut funding? We have so much money and the econonmy is roaring. /sarc
How about Radio Free Europe?
Initially, both RFE and RL were funded principally by the U.S. Congress through the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), but RFE also received supplemental private donations.
In 1971, all CIA involvement ended and thereafter RFE and RL were funded by Congressional appropriation through the Board for International Broadcasting (BIB) and after 1995 the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG). The two corporations were merged into RFE/RL, Inc. in 1976.

I’m now refusing interviews from Penelope Cruz.

I don't care if it's even $1. I don't want even a penny of tax dollars being used to pay off this dictatorial bunch of Marxist thugs at NPR. One of the first things a Republican House should do, is to CUT OFF a;; tax payer funds to this outfit. At a time of $1.3 Trillion deficits, funding this dictatorial outfit is something that American tax payers simply can't afford.
