Texas National Guardsman slain in Mexico

EL PASO, Texas — Authorities say a 21-year-old Texas National Guard soldier was one of two men killed on a street in the violent border city of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Spokesman Arturo Sandoval of the Chihuahua state attorney general's office says family members identified the soldier as 21-year-old Jose Gil Hernandez of El Paso.

The identity of the other man was not available, and details on the incident and the dead were few.

A message left with FBI El Paso spokesman Michael Martinez by The Associated Press on Wednesday night was not immediately returned. However, he told the El Paso Times that Hernandez was shot about 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Colonia Revolucion Mexicana in Ciudad Juarez.

Martinez told the newspaper that the FBI and the Army's Criminal Investigation Division were trying to verify the details of the shooting. A message left Wednesday night with a spokeswoman at Fort Bliss, near El Paso, was not immediately returned. A terse statement issued by Fort Bliss on Wednesday afternoon said only that its investigators had not confirmed the identity of "the individual involved in the incident in Juarez."

“I wonder, don’t National Guardsmen get the same memos?”

Sure they do - problem here may be that he’s a 21-year-old who thought he was bulletproof. He certainly wasn’t in drill status, on Title 10 orders or on Title 32 orders. Really sucks for his family.

“the South Koreans sleep well on their border with North Korea..courtesy of the American Taxpayer ...why can’t Texans”

The U. S. govt won’t build a fence, keep it guarded and use minefields anywhere except the borders of foreign allies outside of the N. American continent.

So you could see it from your house? To use another popular axiom.

Not from east Tennessee LOL. That's where I live. In 1994 I was visiting family in New Mexico and we drove to El Paso. Driving through town you could easilly see Jaurez to the south. No missing or mistaking it.

When I was in training at Ft Huachuca back in ‘90, I declined to cross the border. I didn't think it was too dangerous, but the Army had already issued warnings about US military personnel entering Mexico. I saw no reason to go.

About seven years ago I had to put a crazy guy down on a Greyhound bus traveling through Wisconsin. He had been acting real weird for hours, and then he physically attacked the driver as the vehicle was going down the interstate. I was sitting right behind the driver, so I grabbed the attacker and slammed him down headfirst into the door well and held him there until we could get pulled over into a rest area. When we came to a stop the driver opened the door and I pushed the nut out onto the pavement. He kind of wandered around for a bit in a daze until the state patrol finally got him.

I wonder how many are in the security detail when the FBI goes into Mexico to meet with authorities? Do they use their own internal force, utilize our military or a contractor military?
