The Mormon vote: More faith in Sharron Angle?
Las Vegas Sun ^ | 17 October 2010 | Delen Goldberg

When Sharron Angle’s pastor went on a hate-filled rant about Mormonism, calling the religion “kooky” and a “cult,” it was tempting to assume the Republican U.S. Senate candidate would pay the consequences. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are among Nevada’s most politically engaged and conservative constituencies.

But it is Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, himself a Mormon, who is facing the tough questions from members of the faith.

That was apparent the moment he walked into a meeting of the Mormon Business Associates networking group in August. Members, angry with his liberal policies, peppered Reid with questions about immigration and gay marriage. They booed him, according to people who were there, and shouted catcalls.

“It was an absolute blood bath,” said a woman who attended.

Wednesday, it was Angle’s turn to appear before the group — and she was welcomed with cheers and a standing ovation. The woman who described Reid’s “blood bath” called the Angle event a “love fest.” The candidate was even signing autographs.

“She was on the home-team turf,” said Ron Futrell, a former TV sports reporter turned Republican political consultant who attended both events. “When Harry came, it was like he was on the visiting team. You’d think it would be the Mormon who would get the nice reception. It was the exact opposite.”

Mormons make up 7 percent of the Nevada population, according to the church. Leaders stress civic engagement and voting as sacred responsibilities, so turnout among church members is expected to be high. In the 2008 Republican presidential caucus, Mormons made up a quarter of the vote. Mitt Romney, a Mormon, captured 94 percent of their support.

If lapsed Catholics are called CINO's, what are lapsed Mormon politicians called? Hopefully, unemployed in Harry's case.

“When Sharron Angle’s pastor went on a hate-filled rant about Mormonism”

That is “at one time pastor” compared to Jeremiah Wright who was Obama’s long time pastor and baptised his children.

Hey Las Vegas Sun, you can at least put a candidate’s pastor rants in perspective, couldn’t you?

If you were not biased that is.

No argument from me. Sharron Angle also had the good sense to cut her ties with said loony-toons pastor long before it became a campaign issue.

I've had a lot of "friends" over my lifetime who turned out to be major disappointments, or worse. Haven't we all?

I have a lot of Mormon friends in Vegas and I don’t know a single one who will vote for Harry Reid. Reid would be better off converting to the Nation of Islam. Maybe he could shore up his waning urban vote.

All so true.

As far as I’m concerned the vast majority of Nevada is not LDS. Harry Reid could lose all Mormon vote and still win re-election. As far as Reid goes, he is the common product of someone who keeps getting re-elected so many times. Could somebody please bring in term limits for senators? If there is one Amendment which IMO is neccessary, a Senate term-limit amendment would be it.

I recall actually being relieved when Harry Reid replaced Tom Daschle at the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate. Up to that point, Reid's record was fairly moderate, not all that different from our own Arlen Specter.

I'm keenly aware what a jerk Arlen turned out to be, but I also am grateful for him for some good things, not the lest of which was giving us Clarence Thomas, my favorite supreme court justice.

It took even less time for Reid to make a hard left turn than Arlen. He has shown his professed religion is nothing more than a fig-leaf for his real religion of socialism.

I have some good friends who are Christian Scientists, and I have some other good friends who are Mormons.

As a Christian, I believe that their religions are false and deluded. But they are good people.

And no doubt they feel the same way about my religion. That’s their privilege. I don’t try to argue with them about it, and neither do they. We get along just fine.

Most Mormons I know are ashamed and don’t want to talk much about the special revelations of Joseph Smith and his golden plates. The pastor is definitely out of line, but most Mormons won’t associate her as much with her pastor, as the Americans connected the dots with Jeremiah Wright.

Jack.

This is good news, the Mormons are serious about voting.

Oh please. In any religion, you have active members who are true believers of their doctrines and some that may call them self Protestants, Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons or whatever but who don't follow their doctrine or who fully believe anything.

I don't know many Catholics who will talk to people outside their faith about the doctrine of transubstantiation, just to name one example. That doesn't mean they are ashamed of it or even, necessarily, that they don't believe it.

Their reasons for not engaging in such discussions are as numerous as the individuals themselves. Some view it as casting their pearls before swine. Others view it as giving an infant which has no teeth a beefsteak which requires teeth.

God leaves us free to study and choose. So does the 1st Amendment. That's why we have more than 300 brands of Christianity. If you don't like one of the available brands out there, you are free to start your own.

When Sharron Angle’s pastor went on a hate-filled rant about Mormonism,...

That's former pastor, as of 6+ years ago. Most Nevada Mormons know that it was Harry Reid supporters who solicited and publicized this kook's rant.

How many times to I have to say it: Harry Reid is a MINO (Mormon in name only). Every Mormon I know - to the one - is a true blue conservative. Mormons put him in and Mormons will take him out.

I think repeal of the 17th Amendment (which should occur immediately after the 16th goes away) would cure the problem, as most state legislatures would keep a check on how long a Senator serves. I doubt that many would want to keep someone as long as Reid has “served” (himself), let alone as long as that KKK-er, Bobby “Sheets” Byrd or Teddy “No Pants” Kennedy were seated on that chamberpot!
