U.S. Senate endorsement (WV): John Raese

WEST Virginians must soon choose who will represent them in the U.S. Senate for the next two years. The issue in the race is how Democrats have used their 59-41 majority,  and whether West Virginians want to see more of the same.

The Daily Mail endorses Republican John Raese.

Make no mistake. That choice is painful.

Gov. Joe Manchin is one of the most engaging and effective governors in the state's history. He has tackled many of the state-erected barriers to economic growth - a broken workers' compensation system, uncompetitive tax rates, an unfair legal climate.

The governor also has tried to educate liberal Washington on what its barmy energy plans would do to the U.S. economy.

But it's no use.

Leading Democrats have made it clear that if Manchin were sent to Washington, he would be expected to function as part of the team.

Earlier this month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told  Democratic members that it was fine to distance themselves from the leadership on the campaign trail.

"Go for it," she said. "Just win your election."

Similarly, Sen. Jay Rockefeller recently blessed the anti-Obama tack Manchin has taken of late.

"Whatever he does, I'll support, in order that he be part of the Democratic caucus," Rockefeller told The Washington Post.

Well, why? The answer is obvious:

The liberal wing of the Democratic Party want to keep churning out more of the same - perhaps another bailout, another entitlement program, a 2,000-page energy bill, a big tax increase on Jan. 1.

Voters aren't sure what they are hearing from Manchin - tactics or conviction.

There is no such mystery about Raese.

He's a successful businessman. He is a level-headed conservative who knows what works and what doesn't.

Alarmed by the nation's condition - its "industrial coma" - he would pursue the economic growth needed to put people back to work and help the nation heal.

The nation badly needs those policies.

From the bailouts of GM and Chrysler to the $787 billion stimulus, Democrats have arrogantly rejected public opinion to pursue one failed policy after another.

In the middle of the worst recession in decades, Democrats used their majority to enact a trillion-dollar new entitlement program - Obamacare.

The federal government has gone from running deficits that were too large at $400 billion a year

under a Republican president and Congress to $1.4 trillion under a Democratic president and Congress.

The national debt now stands at $13.2 trillion.

Raese would oppose more of this foolishness and push to get the nation back on the right track.

That's what needs to happen. Americans need to get the lead out of the economy and get growing again.

John Raese would help make sure it does.

The Washington culture, the longer people stay there, makes good people into mediocre people, mediocre people into bad people and bad people into positively evil people.

Orrin Hatch went to Washington as a firebrand conservative and was highly effective for his first few years. Then, he became more interested in being Ted Kennedy's friend.

The only guy I can name who has ever improved the longer he stayed in Washington was Jesse Helms.

It’s way past time to break up the grip D.C. has on this country. Those same old 10,20,30 years career politicians are corrupt to the core, and ‘pick’ for us who is to be ...

NOT anymore.

WE THE PEOPLE are rising up.

Congress YOU’RE FIRED.

Barney Frank, Hoyer, all of you...you think you are undefeatable....it’s just a matter of time....

How sweet would it be for both Kennedy’s and Byrd’s seats to go Republican...
