Water Not in Jeopardy (NM - Bill Clinton)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | October 16, 2010 | ABQJournal editorial staff

"I did not have sex with that woman...."

"We need Charlie (Rangel) to go back to Washington..."

"Besides being a native Texan, there's a reason (Susana Martinez) got all that money from those people that are interested in your water: They want to drain the Rio Grande and the Pecos."

These are all statements uttered by former President William Jefferson Clinton — with number three coming while stumping in Española on Thursday for gubernatorial candidate Diane Denish. And the veracity of the first two is useful in determining how much credibility to give the third.

After a controversial and ill-advised ad featuring lieutenant governor hopeful Brian Colón calling Denish's opponent a tejana, one would think the Democrats wouldn't revisit that sore spot. But they did.

...The waters of the Rio Grande are apportioned under the byzantine Rio Grande Compact, a treaty signed in 1938 ... and the Pecos under the Pecos River Compact, ... [both] approved by Congress ...

And maybe Clinton doesn't know that the current governor, Bill Richardson, was born in California. Or that Colón himself was born in New York.

Clinton's comments and the Denish campaign's resurrection of the birthplace issue are embarrassments to the party. Questioning out-of-state donations is fair game. But this kind of cheap shot is not the kind of help Denish needs.

Gotta laugh at these last minute stabs by the Dims to bring down Martinez (she's up in the polls by 11 or 12 points and well over 50%). They also put up an ad quoting a statement 20 years ago by Texas oilman and Martinez contributer Clayton Williams about rape: “'If it's inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.” Susana took his contributions and gave them to a local rape crisis center.

What an idiot. He knows nothing about Western water law. New Mexico and Texas long ago re-focused their squabbles on ground-water rights.

Slick Willie did this in Espanola. When I was in High School (early 80’s) Espanola was the the low rider capital of the world, and the butt of many jokes. I believe every cholo joke ever written had the clowns who paraded the streets of Espanola in mind.
