he New York Post has endorsed Democrat Andrew Cuomo for governor, saying it believes he has the "vision to blaze a path to reform.''
The endorsement comes hours before a seven-way debate in the contentious race to replace Gov. David Paterson in Albany.
The newspaper on Monday said it based its endorsement for Cuomo "in the hope, if not necessarily the full expectation'' that Cuomo would become the strong leader that New York state needs.
But the Post said it isn't clear whether anyone currently running for the state's highest office "is fully up to the task.''
It called Cuomo's Republican opponent, Carl Paladino, a man "with a towering temper and a well-documented contempt for the truth.''
The Post said Cuomo was an effective attorney general who understood "the underlying issues of Albany's ingrained dysfunction and the urgent need to address them.''
Cuomo and Paladino have been busy readying themselves for tonight's televised debate as their surrogates continued to snipe away.
Cuomo's campaign released a new TV ad claiming that Paladino would take away rights and that victims of rape and incest would be denied abortions that are now legal.
Paladino has said he personally opposes abortion as a Catholic. He has said that he would advocate against abortion, but changing abortion laws is not a legislative priority. He said abortion isn't an issue in the campaign but is a way for Democrats to energize their base.
Abortion rights in New York are protected by a supermajority in the Democrat-led Assembly.

I drove by Hofstra University yesterday and there were hundreds of Cuomo signs all over the place and not one Paladino sign - there were even a ton of signs for some district judge.
Carl needs to get his message out to Long Island much better, I barely see any of his commercials either.
There are a lot of Republicans fired up on Long Island, hopefully the debate helps.
Now the argument is that New York voters are too stupid to realize the brilliance of Paladino's displays of "character."
Carl Paladino is a genius and is incapable of making mistakes. His every utterance is oracular and his personal flaws are not bugs, they're features.
Remember: it would be a really bad idea to take away any lessons from Paladino's complete meltdown. We should not do anything differently. We should pretend that his loss was due to insufficient hero worship of the candidate.
Oh yeah, that and the endorsement they just gave, that pretty much nails it down. They got caught.
Good point.
The New York state legislature is so corrupt that the Dems
don’t even bother to cover their outright thievery.
NY is right behind CA in impending financial disaster. Whatever they may believe politically, if they choose to elect Cuomo, they will reap the whirlwind and WE will pay for it.
Um, Carley, the New York Post's editor-in-chief, Col Allen, issued a press release on September 30 specifically denying Paladino's claims and specifically instructing Michael Caputo to check his facts before he accuses the Post of such activities.
You couldn't be more wrong.
wideawake is a troll
just ignore her and maybe she’ll go away
you can always count on her to ignore the MEDIA BIAS and blame our candidates as being so hideous
she might just as well be on Cuomo’s payroll
They admitted no such thing. They categorically denied it, in fact.
And the Paladino campaign, after being challenged by the Post, provided not a shred of evidence to back up their lie.
Oh yeah, that and the endorsement they just gave, that pretty much nails it down. They got caught.
Let's get this straight: your argument is that if a politician lies about you, and you challenge him to substantiate his lie, and he then completely fails to do so, and you then endorse his opponent - then his lie must be true?
Paladino is the one who got caught making a wild accusation he couldn't back up. And that's not the only time, either.
The guy's an embarrassment.
RE: The guy’s an embarrassment.
Is that your main reason as to why he does not deserve to be governor?
Which is more important, the RIGHT POLICIES, or STYLE?
The media didn't tell Paladino to lie about the Post. The media didn't tell Paladino to make Cuomo's personal life the centerpiece of his campaign. The media didn't tell Paladino to waste his money on a TV blitz in Buffalo. The media didn't tell Paladino to make a speech about homosexual "marriage". Paladino did all that on his own.
Is it possible that voters took a look at the way Paladino mismanaged his historic opportunity and thought: "If this guy can't even run a layup political campaign, he can't run NY."
Is that remotely possible?
We’d best be careful, lest some get the idea that we’re cynics....
This isn't a matter of "style." Brusque, no-nonsense GOP politicians are quite electable in NY - to wit, Rudy Giuliani and Al D'Amato.
The problem is that Paladino claims to be no-nonsense - but then all he gives is nonsense.
Why is he comparing his personal life to Cuomo's personal life? No one in New York state cares.
Why is he taking a strong stance on homosexuality, then backpedaling, then taking a strong stance again? What kind of resolve or character does that show?
If he was the "no frills, all business" candidate his campaign claims he is, why has he continually involved himself in petty squabbling unrelated to the three core policy issues in New York: jobs, taxes and graft?
He could have won this thing, but he has thrown it away - and he has thrown it away by not being what he claimed to be.
Isn't that like demanding someone prove they didn't beat their wife? Come on, the "editor" is a sleazebag and no decent human being would defend him.
Personally, I think New York deserves Cuomo and all the corrupt politicians they have in Albany. It's going to be fun watching them slide off into bankruptcy. Thank God there is going to be a republican congress so we don't have to worry about our money being stolen from us to save the morons.
I was born, raised and live in New York State. I’ll be voting for Paladino. If these morons in the State decide to put another Cuomo in the Governor’s Mansion, they deserve everything they get. I guess they didn’t learn anything from their vote for Obama.
No, it's the exact opposite actually.
Paladino accused these guys of doing something really disgusting and horrible.
They responded by asserting their innocence and demanding that Paladino back up his accusations.
Paladino didn't.
If you're going to make such a serious allegation against someone, you'd better have proof.
Come on, the "editor" is a sleazebag and no decent human being would defend him.
Circular reasoning. Why is he a "sleazebag"? Because he allegedly sent a photographer to take pictures of a little girl - but that's precisely what's being disputed.
Personally, I think New York deserves Cuomo and all the corrupt politicians they have in Albany.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion.
I think the long-suffering people of NY deserved a real alternative this year - and they got two clowns instead.
So you’re saying Paladino’s kid lied? Is that what you are saying?
Rupert Murdoch’s fingerprints are all over this. Follow the money.
BTW, you just showed your lack of respect for the American people. They VOTED for Paladino and he won the primary, of course people like YOU think you know so much better then the poeple who voted for him. Who did you want to win, that perpetual loser Lazio?
