NY Post Endorses Andrew Cuomo for Governor; Candidates Debate Tonight
NBC New York ^ | 10/18/2010

Posted on 10/18/2010 6:48:41 AM PDT by WebFocus

he New York Post has endorsed Democrat Andrew Cuomo for governor, saying it believes he has the "vision to blaze a path to reform.''

The endorsement comes hours before a seven-way debate in the contentious race to replace Gov. David Paterson in Albany.

The newspaper on Monday said it based its endorsement for Cuomo "in the hope, if not necessarily the full expectation'' that Cuomo would become the strong leader that New York state needs.

But the Post said it isn't clear whether anyone currently running for the state's highest office "is fully up to the task.''

It called Cuomo's Republican opponent, Carl Paladino, a man "with a towering temper and a well-documented contempt for the truth.''

The Post said Cuomo was an effective attorney general who understood "the underlying issues of Albany's ingrained dysfunction and the urgent need to address them.''

Cuomo and Paladino have been busy readying themselves for tonight's televised debate as their surrogates continued to snipe away.

Cuomo's campaign released a new TV ad claiming that Paladino would take away rights and that victims of rape and incest would be denied abortions that are now legal.

Paladino has said he personally opposes abortion as a Catholic. He has said that he would advocate against abortion, but changing abortion laws is not a legislative priority. He said abortion isn't an issue in the campaign but is a way for Democrats to energize their base.

Abortion rights in New York are protected by a supermajority in the Democrat-led Assembly.

You alone have the truth and millions of Tea Party people are wrong.

I think that, because of its outright refusal to organize itself, much less to define a coherent platform, the Tea Party movement is its own worst enemy.

I think that's the truth, and I think the con-jobs perpetrated on their Tea Party supporters by a number of high profile Tea Party candidates supports my assertion.

RE: because Paladino chose to start harping on non-issues.

NOPE, it was not Paladino who was HARPING on the non-issues, it was the mainstream media who DELIBERATELY DIRECT THEIR AIM at off the cuff statements he makes IGNORING the POLICIES he brings to the table, which are the ones that will make or break the future of this once great state.

Many New Yorkers might be duped by this biased strategy, but I would think that FReepers ought to know better.

He happens to be a Freeper and Paladinos best friend.

The way he's running this campaign, he's looking like Cuomo's best friend.

the mainstream media who are supposed to EDUCATE the public regarding the issues

The media has neither an obligation to, nor a reputation for, educating the public. The job of the media is to sell advertising space.

It is up to the voters to educate themselves.

I'll point out that Paladino's website is also very light on any policy details.

There's nothing on his website that I haven't already heard from the media on his policy positions.

NOPE, it was not Paladino who was HARPING on the non-issues....

Paladino brought them up on his own, on purpose, and as a result he ran his own campaign off the rails.

If you can't see that ... well, there are none so blind as those who will not see...

Well if this is the case, then you know better than to REFER to what rags like the Post and the Times tell us, and then dwelling on what their headlines present as if they were the be-all and end-all of being a governor.

I’ve listened to Paladino’s interviews with people who actually take the time to ask him about his policies — Larry Kudlow for instance.

Kudlow never asked him about what he said here or there but asked him SPECIFICALLY ABOUT HIS POLICIES.

*THAT* is what I’d like to know. So STOP harping on his statements about gays or felons in Albany. I get tired of hearing it.

*THAT* is what voters ought to focus on.

The Tea Party is “WE the People”. I’m sorry that you don’t get that. The Republicans are organized. How they doin’? Especially with their Big Tent? Not well? Awwwww.

I have to disagree with this one, Paladino was on local Fox NY last week in the morning and the morning achor (Roseann Scotto) would not let him bring up the issues, she went after him totally on the NY Post and the gay comments.
I don’t know why anyone expected any different for the Lib News headquaters here in NY.
I will say Paladino needs to stop letting these so called “news people” dictate the conversation.
He needs to stick to the facts that NY state is broke and the deficit is huge, the state pension funds are out of control, state income taxes went up last year and will again, and the fact that 1.7 million people have NY since 2000 because it is too expensive to live here.

The Press is Cuomo’s best friend. Including the NY Post and Dicker. When the press decides to entrap and outright lie, people like you believe it. You buy the press spin. There are some Freepers who are smarter and see exactly what’s happening. We saw them elect Obama and diss Palin. It worked because there were people like you. They bought every word as true. From a press they say is biased and yet believe.

RE: If you can’t see that ... well, there are none so blind as those who will not see.

I can see that and I also can see that the lamestream media are making a big deal of something that for me and many other voters, are trifling issues compared to what troubles New York State. So, no, I am not blind, I am aware of what he said and don’t give much importance to them because they are NOT IMPORTANT.

My eyes are open to what’s most important — FISCAL POLICIES, OUR BALOONING DEBT AND PENSION AND HEALTHCARE PROBLEMS.

You ought to open your eyes to what’s more important as well.

Thanks for that link, I saw it but didn’t follow it. Very interesting and pretty much verifies what I thought. I’m a pretty good judge of character and that confirms my first impression of Dicker.

You are right, there is no justification, so how is it you are defending the Post? Nobody accused the Post, they accused Dicker and I’m firmly convinced Dicker did it. It seems the only one who doesn’t believe Paladino is the Post and their flunkies.

You buy the press spin. There are some Freepers who are smarter and see exactly what’s happening.

What's happening is that Paladino is getting obliterated.

One can buy the press spin that he is being obliterated because he is an "angry ultraconservative" - or you can use your brain and figure out that he is being obliterated because he comes across as a cranky loser.

Your argument seems to be that Paladino is somehow a great candidate and that he is only losing because the voters are stupid.

Wideawake could easily have been a paid Cuomo shill, with all the remarks she has been making here

If you are not on the Cuomo team, then why are you trying to demoralize the troops with you “oh we just can’t win” “we have such a terrible candidate” BS

Either that or too stupid to know when to keep your trap shut

HGeez the cuomo trolls are out in full force today

maybe the internal polls are not as rosy as the ones his shills are announcing

I know what I see- and I drive across the state every week- Paladino signs outnumber Cuomo signs 500 to one

and the new Cuomo signs I have seen recently have all been put in front of closed and boarded up businesses

More like clueless enough to watch the press try to elect Cuomo and blame it on Paladino.

Nobody accused the Post, they accused Dicker and I’m firmly convinced Dicker did it.

Dicker is an editor of the Post.

If you're "firmly convinced" that Dicker did it all by himself, separately from the Post, then let's see your evidence.

It seems the only one who doesn’t believe Paladino is the Post and their flunkies.

If by "flunkies" you mean "the vast majority of New York state's likely voters" then that statement would be accurate.

Oh, I know that. But that's exactly what a some of us predicted, the day after Paladino opened his trap.

He simply gave them something to work with -- on his own initiative, and on a topic that had nothing to do with the campaign.

Once he did that, there was no way they were going to let him leave that topic, and get back to the real issues.

I will say Paladino needs to stop letting these so called “news people” dictate the conversation.

He can't not let them dictate it. Paladino isn't the one with the cameras and broadcast infrastructure, and he doesn't buy ink by the barrel. Like it or not, people still get their information from the "news people."

The truth is that Carl Paladino screwed the pooch with his comments on homosexuality, and his advisors helped him to do it. Just to give Carl a break, we'll stipulate that it was a girl pooch.
