A majority of Americans would recommend pursuing a government career to a close friend or relative just getting out of school, according to a new Washington Post poll on perceptions of federal employees.
Fifty seven percent of respondents to the survey said they would recommend a public sector career, while a third of respondents said they would not.

My kid is a recent grad w/his masters. He’s had no problem finding a job in the private sector but the pay leaves something to be desired. Large corporations are paying very low wages (compared to years past) mainly because they can...supply versus demand, etc. plus benefits have been scaled back drastically (thank you Obamacare.)
In our area, large companies with good reputations are hiring accountants for 35,000 a year. A friend is a GaTech engineering grad and he’s making 38,000. Take the same job, and work for the gov’t (city, state, or federal) and you’ll be drawing 60-70 K, plus much better benefits. Sad but true.
During a depression, expanding government and creating more and more government jobs is like drinking your own blood to prevent starvation.
Only non-government jobs create wealth. Government jobs produce nothing and suck wealth out of the economy replacing it with onerous regulations and ignorant oversight of business.
It’s a recipe for the destruction of the country, and that’s why the federal government is doing it. We’re on to you, zer0, and we’re coming to get you.
Hey, government jobs have been very, very good to Sarah.
Hire only those, that, can tell you where their salary is coming from.
DumBO’s stash is not the correct answer.
excessive pay and benefits, near-perfect job security, almost impossible to get fired for even the most egregious incompetence
yup, a gubmint job is the meal ticket for anyone willing to sell their soul
anecdote: just the other day I could help overhearing a (loud) conversation at the next table at a restaurant
a young woman, I’d guess late ‘20s, was bemoaning the fact that she’d been busting her butt for her company for years, working long hours to build her career.... while her best friend from college went into a govt agency, sailed along barely working when she felt like it, now making a much larger salary with better benefits etc.
that woman next to me sure was feeling like a chump for not taking the easy, secure, lazy path of her friend
Well of course! Look at MD and northern VA economies compared to say the southwest.
What is surprising is how many here oppose cutting government workers pensions. That promises crap they cite as a ‘contract’. Promising others peoples money to others makes sense as a contract to some that call them conservatives here.
But those D socialists are different. Oh they want to spend our money. We need to stop them because they are different.
I agree. Maybe if conservatives joined the government, they would have better oversight on what the problems are and try to make things more efficient, even while paring down and streamlining positions in their department. It would be nice to have some confidence that government workers weren’t actively undermining the Bush Administration’s directives when they tried to trim the workforce and useless programs.
