Remember those signs that 18-term incumbent Jim Oberstar of Minnesota might be in trouble?
First an internal GOP poll showed Republican Chip Cravaack, a former Navy and Northwest Airlines pilot, trailing Oberstar by just three points42% to 45%. Then came a couple of surprising anecdotes: the AP reported a local union nearly endorsed Cravaack, and there was such interest in the campaign that the debatescheduled at 8 a.m. on a Tuesdayhad to be moved to a larger venue.
Well, no surprise here, but it looks like we have confirmation that the interest isnt being generated by Oberstar supporters. Politico reports that the Obamacare and cap-and-trade supporting Oberstar had just one donor from his home district this past quarter:
With a potentially competitive race developing back home in Minnesotas 8th District, Transportation Committee Chairman Jim Oberstar collected a contribution from just one resident of the district between June 22 and Sept. 30, according to a federal election report filed Wednesday.
Jane Robbins of Pine City gave Oberstar $500 on Aug. 22.
Other than that, all of his contributions came from political action committees, Native American tribes or individual donors in other districts and states.
In all, the veteran Iron Range Democrat, first elected in 1974, collected just $233,102 in receipts over the time period. By comparison, fellow Minnesotan Michele Bachmann, a Republican firebrand, pulled in $5.4 million between July 1 and Sept. 30.

Jane Robbins probably is his secretary in the district or something
I'm 53 and he spoke to my class in High School as a congress critter for crying out loud!
What took the 8th district so long????
Of course in the good ol' days it used to be known as the "red eighth" and not because it was conservative....
Pine City, a bastion of conservative values.../s
and when was the last time the old SOB liven in the district, he never did when I lived in duluth
I was raised 80 miles west of the twin ports and even that far away from Duluth, still the "red eighth" it made me a hard core conservative back then by seeing the waste and control of government.
It's a welfare state within a welfare state.
18 Terms??? What a friggin’ pig. Even when this guy’s time at the trough is done, he will cost us all millions in pension and benefits.
lol

According to Wikipedia, Jane Robbins is the mayor of Pine City, MN and has been so since 1992.
Say Goodbye Oberstar.
This race has been my long shot bet since Spring because of Oberstar’s sponsorship of the new Clean Water bill. He wants to put the EPA in charge of every mud puddle in the nation. That's hardly a cheerful prospect for the Congressional District with the lion's share of Minnesota's resorts. It's also quite a transformation for a Congressman who originally ran promising to fight tooth and nail over additional federal restrictions on land use in the aftermath of the creation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
YA between Obey and Oberstar it really was/is a people’s republic
“Say Goodbye Oberstar.”
From your lips to Gods ear.
What are the odds this guy is going to win on Nov 3?
Don’t laugh - he’s been elected 18 times....
I hope so too, but I don't know. The rats have a history of finding batches of enough misplaced votes at the last minute. They are supposed to have 170 safe liberal seats according to this AP story.
Democrats abandon House progressives
I can see them finding enough votes to save Oberstar. If they do that crap all over the country to retain control of the House, then we'll see what happens with gross voter fraud on a massive scale, in particular the districts that they picked up in 2006 and 2008.
“then we’ll see what happens with gross voter fraud on a massive scale, in particular the districts that they picked up in 2006 and 2008.”
Why does the word BOOM come to mind?
It’s MN, which is as bad or worse than CA, but maybe not quite as bad as MA.
