O’s magic wanes
By Boston Herald Editorial Staff

So, has the magic gone?

Sure, there’s always a certain level of excitement during a presidential visit. The motorcade, the prospect of a wave here, a photo op there, for a few brief hours being the center of the political universe.

Asked about the “why” of today’s visit by Barack Obama on his behalf, Gov. Deval Patrick said, “He’s the president of the United States. I haven’t been doing this so long that it doesn’t excite me that the president of the United States would come along and take up our cause.”

Other good Democrats, running in other parts of the country, have not been so eager to be side-by-side with this president. But, hey, this is Massachusetts and if Obama didn’t do much to save the Senate campaign of Martha Coakley, well, that wasn’t his fault.

But some 10 months later the landscape has indeed changed. Hundreds of millions of federal dollars have been sent back to Massachusetts - for Medicaid, for roads and bridges, for public employee salaries - and we’re supposed to be grateful.

But an increasing number of Massachusetts voters - the realists among us - are unhappy and disillusioned. (Suffolk University’s latest poll showed 56 percent of independent voters disapprove of Obama.)

Notice how he only speaks in front of hand picked college kids these days. He can’t afford to to talk to folks who actually work for a living.

Suddenly, a sharp, dry cough was heard, and they all looked round.

It came from a tall, supercilious-looking Rocket, who was tied to the end of a long stick. He always coughed before he made any observation, so as to attract attention.

He has and will continue to cause irreparable harm to America. Unless he is removed in 2011 then it is probably over.

The idiots who watch TV have no clue.

He couldn't be any more unpopular in Ohio if he showed up wearing a Michigan jersey.

No more unexpected questions for him. If he can't use the prompter he at least needs to memorize the answers to questions he knows are coming.

For 75% he’s too liberal, for 20% he’s not liberal enough, and for 5% he’s just...the right color.

“He can’t afford to to talk to folks who actually work for a living”.

...nor can he afford to get questions that aren’t already answered in the teleprompter.

"I am not going to stop talking to him merely because he pays no attention. I like hearing myself talk. It is one of my greatest pleasures. I often have long conversations all by myself, and I am so clever that sometimes I don't understand a single word of what I am saying."

"What right have you to be happy? You should be thinking about others. In fact, you should be thinking about me. I am always thinking about myself, and I expect everybody else to do the same. That is what is called sympathy. It is a beautiful virtue, and I possess it in a high degree."

And who does that sound like?

More like when the fuse flares and goes out, leaving nothing but a pathetic stink.
