What, pray tell, is the ideological difference between "Muslims" and "extremists"?

Until the Mohammedans get rid of the extremists, there is no difference. Any organization, secular or religious, that allows itself to be hijacked leaves everyone in a position of fighting against or acquising.
Many of us fought the LIBs takeover of the Catholic Church after Vatican II. We fought until there was no hope. Then we left. We left but we keep fighting.
If Islam is correct than the terrorists are right. That's all there is to it. So the least politicians can say is that Islam is a pile of crap.
