NY Times' Media Decoder blog
CNN's ratings surged on Tuesday night, as it broadcast the first rescue of 33 miners who had been trapped in a Chilean mine, reports The New York Times' Media Decoder blog.
The cable-news network, usually in third place, jumped to first place with 5 million viewers between 11 p.m. and 11:15 p.m., when the first miner surfaced, the story says. Fox News Channel averaged 4.3 million viewers, while 1.3 million people tuned into MSNBC. The three channels combined typically draw just 2 million viewers at that time, the article points out.
Audiences stayed up late to watch continued coverage of the rescue, with CNN drawing 1.7 million viewers from 1 a.m. until 2 a.m., the story says. Fox was watched by 1.2 million viewers during that hour and MSNBC 575,000.
ABC's "Nightline" extended its program to an hour to cover the rescue, drawing 5 million viewers -- more than the late-night talk shows on NBC and CBS, the article adds.
From Media Bistro The Scoreboard:[which I mainly rely on]
The full ratings scorecard reported to be up shortly, but in the meantime, here are the cable news ratings from the 11 oclock hour last night, when the first Chilean miner was brought to the surface:
CNN: 3.998 million total viewers / 1.422M A25-54
FNC: 3.468 million total viewers / 1.046M A25-54
MSNBC: 1.083 million total viewers / 279K A25-54
Fox News broke in to The OReilly Factor to carry live coverage of the final two Chilean miners being rescued, with coverage anchored by Shepard Smith. The final 40 or so minutes of the pre-taped Factor was interrupted during the 8pmET airing. The segment that was interrupted: ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos on Obama in trouble with the Democrats.

Consistent.
probably due to the Debate
Is that the “15 minutes of fame” Andy Warhol was always going on about? ROTFLMAO!!!
did CNN bleep out the mentions of God?
When they had reached about 10 guys out I sent an email to the news director of Fox News and asked why they weren’t using a Spanish interpreter to tell us what was being said? About a half hour later they started providing this service. Due to my email???
CNN seems to have the edge for people who tune in for breaking news. It’s been this way for a while.
But for people that turn in to actually watch programs, Fox News is #1.
I am still mystified why miners in Chile got all this attention.
Bad things happen all the time....and cable news normally ignores it unless it happens here.
For some reason this grabbed the media spotlight like crazy.
Perhaps because everyone lived?
in my area, at 11 p.m. FNC stopped live coverage of the rescue and showed the repeat of O’Reilly’s show. I believe there was only 1 more rescue worker to be brought to the surface when FNC ended coverage. They covered this story ALL night......Adam Housley did a great job.......but didn’t show the last person to emerge. I switched to CNN to see this.
Fox also allowed a lot of inaccurate reporting and CNN did an overall better job. This was perhaps the story of the decade and Fox seemed amazingly lackadaisical about following up with details. I don't like CNN's liberal bias but you have to give the Devil his due. They did a much better job in the evening and late evening hours.
This is newsworthy because it is so rare.
I couldn't believe that. After 24 hours of coverage, they cut away as the last guy was getting ready to come up. First time I've tuned into CNN in months.
CNN's slogan: If youre watching this, youre flights been canceled.
"Coal"-"a docuseries chronicling the dangerous profession of coal mining set in West Virginia, it was announced on Thursday."
"Although the announcement comes on the heels of the emotional Chilean rescue, Spike TV says the new series has been in development for almost a year."
.
For example , one miner clearly said "Miracle" (Miragollos) but he thought he said "Dangerous" (pelligrosos). My spelling is off, but I understand Spanish.
That being said, I am glad that everyone watched a phenomenal conservative, President Pinera, lead his countrymen. I loved the patriotic outbursts and national pride.
Could've used that a little during the oil spill.
Well done sir. You are a real man, our President is a spoiled child.
“This was perhaps the story of the decade....”
Are you insane?
Nothing new CNN has always been in first place when it comes to disaster.
When Larry King turned to MICHEAL MOORE for Commentary on the miners (MICHEAL FREAKIN’ MOORE!!) The wife and I had a horse-race to see who could get to the remote first.
SHE WON...
I heard his 'advisors' told him to avoid the situation, because there was only a 2% chance of rescue.
I heard he ignored them, because of his Moral and Religious beliefs. He then made sure the public knew the Miners had all the gov't resources and help. Then he made sure the gov't resources stayed out of the way. Then he cut the red tape so the Americans and their rigs could get in without delay.
He believed. He acted as if each miner were his brother.
The unspoken hero of this is the President of Chile.
