Former President Bill Clinton will stop in San Antonio today to rally supporters of U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez and raise money for the embattled Democrat.
Clinton will speak at a public event at the Palo Alto Performing Arts Center in the evening, said Rodriguez spokeswoman Rebeca Chapa. Afterward, he'll meet privately with campaign contributors elsewhere on the premises.
This will be Clinton's second San Antonio appearance on behalf of Rodriguez. He spoke at a rally for him at Palo Alto in 2006.
But though the main attraction is the same, Rodriguez's position has flipped. So has his party's.
When the former president came to town nearly four year ago, Rodriguez was gaining ground on then-U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla, R-San Antonio, in a special election. He went on to topple the 14-year incumbent in December 2006, a month after Democrats had wrestled control of the House from the GOP.
This time, Rodriguez is facing a stiff challenge from Republican Francisco Quico Canseco. The Real Clear Politics website and Cook Political Report consider the contest in Congressional District 23 a toss-up.
Nationally, Democrats are bracing for the loss of House seats and fighting to maintain their majorities in both houses of Congress.
Scott Yeldell, a spokesman for Canseco's campaign, said Clinton's visit signals Democrats are deeply worried about holding onto the district, which stretches from San Antonio to El Paso.
This is just national Democrats, Yeldell said. They know the votes Ciro has taken to raise taxes on Texas families, increase national debt to over $14 trillion, his support for Obamacare. This is simply a desperate attempt to rescue Ciro's failing campaign.
The doors to the auditorium will open at 8 p.m., with the program starting an hour later, Chapa said. Seats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. State Sen. Leticia Van De Putte, D-San Antonio, will serve as emcee.
Texans,
How should we welcome Slick Willie to the Alamo City?
How should we welcome Slick Willie to the Alamo City?
Tar and Feathers sounds appropriate.
Say it isn’t so BJClinton...
BJ is not charging cash for this appearance, he is said to be working for a couple of lewinskys.
Ha! Billy Jeff and Ciro are a perfect match. They will no doubt attack the Alamo at dawn. Or maybe just Dawn.
I gave $100 to Quico Canseco.
Thanks, SS. I had seen that video before but couldn’t remember where.
I really need to trademark my online handle.
San Antonio has a brend new $1,000,000 (ONE MILLION DOLLARS) Homeless shelter. Haven’t a clue how many ‘homeless’ there might be in San Antonio, but that sure sounds pretty expensive.
Homeless are not using these new facilities, instead still going to the churches & other facilities which have served them hot meals for many years.
What to do?
San Antonio has decided to declare the kitchens in all these other buildings which have served the homeless for years are out of ‘compliance’ & they have to SHUT DOWN.
More heavy-handedness from the NObama administration.
“I Won” is still his mantra.
I can’t wait until he is gone-—really gone.
