The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station was evacuated after a suspicious package was found early Wednesday morning.
Explosive experts from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office are investigating two suspicious packages at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, according to an MCSO spokesman.
Lt. Brian Lee said the sheriff's office was contacted at 5 a.m. today by Palo Verde Security to report a suspicious device and received a second call at 5:30 a.m. reporting another suspicious package.
Access to and from the plant was halted, according to Arizona Public Service and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
The immediate area was evacuated and members of the MCSO Explosive Ordnance Division were investigating.

Oh, that’s not good for the operators, especially when you consider NRC fatigue rules are still in effect. Yuck.

The package was found during inspection of a car entering the plant (evidently someone who worked there).

Many years ago I was working at Georgia Power plant Hatch. I was waiting for a hot shot rig to deliver a couple of large tool boxes from Atlanta so my craft labor could get started. From my office trailer I could see the security gate area where they inspected vehicles before allowing them into the plant. The security area consisted of a fenced enclosure with two gates. Whatever was being delivered would be trapped between the two gates while security did their thing.
The driver finally showed up and his truck was being inspected. The next thing I saw is the security guards all running around with M-16's and the driver spread eagle and pushed very hard into the metal chain length fence.
It seems the idiot driver worked for his dads trucking company and supplemented his income by delivering pot around the south east. He had over 2 lbs of it in his cab and was suppossed to deliver it somewhere else after dropping off my toolboxes. Needless to say I did not get my toolboxes for a day becuase they took everything on that truck apart.

AH, South Georgia. I love living here!
Do they do tours of the plant? I’d love to visit.

Nope. Smoke flare used for training firefighters, left under the seat of the car by the guy’s wife without his knowledge. No big deal, really, but I’m glad our security force keeps their eyes open.
It was a nice chance for people to go get some breakfast while they waited for the problem to be cleared up. I finally got into my building about 2 hours late. Last time this happened, we were locked down for half a day.
