Common Household Chemical PFOA Linked to Thyroid Disease
EMaxHealth ^ | 1/21/10 | Deborah Mitchell

Posted on 10/12/2010 1:33:22 AM PDT by truthfreedom

Your couch, carpet, pots and pans, food, and even your clothing may contain a household chemical called PFOA that has been linked to an increased risk of thyroid disease. The research, which was conducted at University of Exeter and Peninsula Medical School, is the first major study to investigate the effect of PFOA on health.

PFOA stands for perfluorooctanoic acid, a substance perhaps most known for its use on nonstick cookware. Manufacturers use PFOA to make fluoropolymers, which are turned into flame retardants for furniture, stain protection treatment for carpeting, greaseproof wrappers for food, waterproof clothing such as Gore-Tex, and wire coatings, along with Teflon® and other trademark products.

Looks like you're gonna be spamming FR all day with Gore-Tex rants.

Might as well at least get a good Seinfeld ping out of it.

Interesting article, I am still perplexed at how I got thyroid cancer. It drives me crazy, I sit here every day and wonder, out of all the millions of men I was 1 of only 6-9 thousand men in the US who got it. I wish the same odds were in my favor when I buy the occasional lottery ticket!

I just did a little digging and the so called “study” was actually a simple review of medical records and has no scientific nor statistical basis to be used as anything more than fish wrap or toilet paper.

This is just another group of people trying to scare us to make money and also push a political agenda.

After sprinkling this sort of lying crap on boards around the web, how long do you usually wait to put the television ads on seeking people to join a class action suit? Does that vary with the responses you get on the web or is it a predetermined process that's thought out based on how well it worked in other John Edwards style mass thefts based on lies?

It drives me crazy

Don't let it.

There's no way telling what caused it. It could have been just one random cosmic gamma ray from a star that exploded billions of years ago and travelled half way across the galaxy, that just happened to travel through your thyroid and mutate the DNA in a single cell in just the right way to cause a cancer.

Life is a dangerous business and is full of risk both common and rare.

The alternative to being alive is much more stable and "safe" but is not nearly as much fun I'm guessing.

Buddy.

I got enough facts here.

The goal isn’t “Make money for me”

The goal is - make Robert W. Gore - the inventor of Gore-tex - the poisoner of millions - wish that he didn’t marry Coons mom.

Duh.

Chris Coons - in case you were wondering - is running for US Senate against the saintly, angelic Christine O’Donnell, who, last time I checked, has not made millions of dollars from poisoning people. Actually, Christine is the kind of person who would rather save someones life than save her own house.

Here’s yet another study of the poison that is PFOA

Yes. Think Chet 99 and the pitbulls.

Chris Coons poisons people and makes millions.

Christine O’Donnell works to save someones life and loses her house in the process.

Again, to recap. In order to make Gore-tex, a poison, PFOA - or C8 - is used. This poison is all over the environment. It’s in your body and my body whether you or I like it or not. You don’t get this PFOA in your system from anything you knowingly do. It’s there and causes a wide range of terrible harm.

Chris Coons stepdad Robert W. Gore invented gore-tex which uses this terrible terrible poison.

Well, obviously you didn’t do any digging at all. You’re a troll for the chemical industry.

Good to see you’re right there, johnny on the spot with your “facts”.

More to come you evil fella you.

Is Chris Coons paying you to hide his role in the poisoning of America?

And here’s the kicker. I don’t want any PFOA in my body at all. I don’t know what it does or doesn’t do. I just don’t want it there.

Ban it.

And send Chris Coons packing.

I usually never respond to and argue with idiots because they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience, but...

You have no idea who I am or what I do, and it is not in the chemical industry. I have been tied to science, mathematics, statistics, and much more in the real world for my entire life.

I keep myself informed about the methods used to perform studies and such because I am not going to let half-baked ignoramuses run around flailing their arms and screaming the sky is falling when it is obvious they have absolutely no knowledge of that which they fear.

You have not reported one “fact” in your posts today but have linked to leftists groups who have no idea of which they write and use the tired leftist techniques of personal and ad hominem attacks as an argument.

You have no science or proof of what you have posted (neither do those links) and resort to mud slinging, which is not a way to win an argument but may make you feel better..

More facts for you.

Enjoy your Gore-tex paycheck and continue to support the poisoner Coons, I suppose.

Did you even read what is at that link?

“it may be that growth changes associated with puberty lead to changes in PFOA and PFOS blood levels, rather than these compounds having any effect on age at puberty.”

Pretty weak supporting ‘evidence’ to any thinking person. If anything, it undercuts the argument.

This looks more like Mann Made Global Warming than science.

And what’s with the Liberal like personal attacks? Are you that insecure of your position?

Because no one cares that much about protecting the interests of the chemical companies on their own free time.

You apparently do. Did PFOA save your child from a flaming car wreck or something?

I’m just posting article after article exposing the dangers of the poison PFOA.

The same poison that Chris Coons is making millions from.

I’m not pretending to be an expert here, so there’s no point in arguing with me.

It’s a poison. That’s all I know. And Chris Coons stepdad invented Gore-tex. And the revenues of WL Gore - a privately held company - were around 1 Billion last year. Chris Coons stepdad, the Chairman of the Board of WL Gore, Robert W. Gore, invented Gore-tex, which uses that PFOA poison which is in all of our systems right now if we want it or not.

The money that Chris Coons uses to fund his campaigns comes from poisoning Americans. It’s pretty clear, even if the science on particular harms is murky.

PFOA is a man-made chemical. It does not belong in our bodies, our blood and our tissues. Poison.

Then why the personal attacks on someone who appears to know a lot more about this than you do?

????????????? How can it be clear if its murky.

PFOA is a man-made chemical. It does not belong in our bodies, our blood and our tissues. Poison.

Natural chemicals are always safer.

Yeah, I mean, it seems to be true. I personally did start by trying to find out what if anything was bad about WL Gore. And I did some research and found out that in making Gore-tex WL Gore uses PFOA, which is a poison which does tend to accumulate in people. I’d prefer myself to have none of it in my body at all ever. And if people have to scrub their pans a little harder, fine, if their raingear isn’t quite as breathable and light, fine. Please don’t poison me with your raingear, thanks.

And, yes, the inventor of Gore-tex is Robert W. Gore, and his stepson is Chris Coons. Gore-tex money paid for Amherst and Yale. And they’ve been poisoning Americans for years.

Now, I’m on “What did Chris Coons know and when did he know it?”

The word you’re missing is particular.

We know that it’s accumulating in us. It’s not a good thing that it’s there. But we haven’t figured out precisely what the most negative effects of it are yet. Thyroid? Cholesterol? Autism? ADD? ADHD?

What did I do personally to get this awful PFOA in my body?

Can just not buying Gore-tex stop the problem? No, I think PFOA should be banned. It’s harmful.

But vote Coons if you want to make sure that PFOAs stay in our bodies, after all, that’s where he makes the big money.
