~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland

Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), the Army's oldest active proving ground, is one of the world's foremost research, development, testing, and training facilities for military weapons and equipment. It is bounded by the Susquehanna and Gunpowder Rivers, the Chesapeake Bay, and the AMTRAK Railroad.

The Installation occupies more than 72,500 acres in Harford County. Notable for its convergence of talents and abilities, APG encompasses more than 60 different tenant activities representing every facet of technology.

Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) was established on the shores of Chesapeake Bay in Maryland’s Harford County in 1917 to provide the nation a site where Army materiel could be developed and tested.  At the same time, the Edgewood Arsenal was established nearby to provide a site for the development, production, and testing of chemical warfare materiel.  The two installations were officially joined as Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1971.

The Army had taken over 69,000 acres of land and water two months earlier. Sandy Hook, NJ and the Army’s proof and acceptance testing ground for ammunition and cannon since 1874 was being closed and the Chesapeake Bay site was selected as the best suited to carry the mission of testing field artillery. From this beginning, APG has grown and evolved into one of the most diversified military installations in the United States.

Aberdeen Proving Ground is home to 9 major commands and supports 70 tenants, 20 satellite and 17 private activities.  The installation provides facilities to perform research, development, testing and evaluation of Army materiel. Facilities include laboratories for research investigations, state-of-the-art ranges, engineering test courses for wheeled and tracked vehicles and a wide variety of research.

The installation also supports a wide variety of training, including mechanical maintenance, health promotion and preventive medicine, chemical and biological defense, and chemical casualty care, chemical demilitarization.  APG also is host National Guard and U.S. Army Reserve operations and training.

APG’s facilities include nearly 15 million square feet of building space in more than 2,000 buildings (including offices, administrative and training facilities, and warehouses, barracks and family housing). There are more than 40 miles of track, nearly 200 firing positions, 8 medical research laboratories, 10 chemical laboratories, 2 physics laboratories, 5 human engineering laboratories, a materials research laboratory as well as Phillips Army Airfield and Weide Army Aviation Support Facility.

Learn More About Aberdeen Proving Ground HERE!

The United States Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, has one of the world's leading collections of military ordnance, ranging from small arms to 240 large armored vehicles, tanks and artillery pieces, some of the last survivors of their type.

The United States Army Ordnance Museum was established in 1919 to exhibit and preserve captured enemy materiel, and also certain United States ordnance materiel which had been shipped to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., for testing purposes. This exhibit served as a reservoir of information for the systematic study of various types of equipment which is always an important part of the program in the design of new weapons.

Why Is There Color?
October 12, 2010

Why do some trees turn into a collage of radiant maroon, red, orange, and yellow colors in the fall? Trees are green in the summer because chlorophyll, a green pigment in the leaves, absorbs red and blue light from the sun. The light reflected from the leaves appears green to our eyes.

Chlorophyll is an unstable substance, and bright sunlight causes it to decompose rapidly. Therefore, plants must continuously synthesize and regenerate it. The shortening days and cool nights of autumn, however, interfere with this process. As chlorophyll breaks down, the green colors of the leaves begin to fade. Some trees change from green to bright yellow as the chlorophyll degrades. In others, the action of sugar in the leaves creates a red pigment, causing the leaves to turn maroon, purple, and bright red as the chlorophyll fades.

But why do we have color? It seems to serve no practical purpose—at least none that scientists can discern. And why are there photoreceptors in our eyes that enable us to see it?

I believe that God’s goodness is the point of His creation. He is “good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works” (Ps. 145:9). He colored the world for our childlike delight. He’s like that, you know.

God, the engineer of all creation,
Spoke the word, and beauty was begun,
Then He gave to us His great salvation
Through the sacrifice of His own Son. —Hess

God’s glory shines through His creation.

Read: Psalm 19:1-6

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. —Psalm 19:1
