Klein-West debate turns nasty

Klein and West are running in a Broward/Palm Beach County district that stretches up the coast and juts into some western suburbs. The mostly white and well-to-do district is virtually evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. They are polar opposites -- Klein, a white Jewish former state legislator/attorney, has spent nearly two decades as an elected official and is a longtime Boca Raton resident. West, who is African-American, moved to Plantation about seven years ago after spending about 22 years in the Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. When Putney asked West to explain why he has called Klein a ``pathetic liberal,'' he responded: ``When you look at the tone of the Klein campaign, it's not been about discussing issues. It's about negative attacks,'' he said, referring to a flier he said Klein coordinated with the Florida Democratic Party that printed West's Social Security number. He said he described Klein as Pelosi's ``mama's boy'' ``because 98 percent of the time he's voted right along the line with Nancy Pelosi.''

The debate comes at a time when incumbents, like Klein, face an angry, almost hostile, electorate. For Klein, the goal is to avoid getting snagged by voters' growing discontent nationally with the Democrats in power amid Obama's sagging approval ratings, high unemployment and a troubled economy. Meanwhile, West hammers away by hanging those national problems around his opponent's neck.

So far, West has raised about $4 million -- more than Klein for the current election cycle. Klein, however, has more cash on hand than West to spend on advertising -- $2.8 million to $2.25 million. On Monday night, Klein will attend a fundraiser with President Obama at the Coral Gables home of former Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning.

Lt. Col Allen West is now either tied or ahead of Klein in the polls. Klein is bringing in Obama tomorrow to raise more money for him.

That may help financially, but could lose him votes among Independents who don't like Obama and who want someone less of a rubber stamp for his agenda. The New York Times shows West has a 54 percent chance of winning as of now.

I am down here in Florida, but am seeing a lot of pro-Allen West advertising on the various websites the last couple of days. Haven’t seen anyhing for Klein. Klein is desparate for cash . . doubt that Obama will net him more than a few hundred thousand when he goes down to Miami. Obama will not show his face up in Boca, which is surprising.

I’m not familiar with Klein, but I’ve Colonel West several times on Fox. He is one very sharp individual. I’d vote for him in a heartbeat.

I hate to say it, but I'd be willing to bet that the vast majority of Jewish voters in that district will be voting for the dem, for the simple reason that he's Jewish, much like the vast majority of Black voters voted for Obama, simply because he's Black.

The reason I say that is just from personal experience with my family. Even though their beliefs might match up with many of the same beliefs of Colonel West, they won't care, and they'll pull the lever (or punch the chad) for the Jew.

The Congressional Black Caucus is supporting Klein, as is the Veterans of Foreign War, even though Klein never served in the military.

Electing Allen West to the Congress will have more impact than electing just another conservative. He is an “in your face” Conservative and is a born leader, not a back bencher who you never see after they are sent to Congress.

You’re right, I should have said that the only group left that still uniformly buys Obama’s con are negroes. I overstated it. In fact, I have a dysfunctional nephew who supports Obama. He’s not a negro. He’s an idiot.
